I think that "team player" is used in the work environment to avoid competition between employees. They're just trying to convince everyone to work together, as a team, rather than competing against each other.
One of the reasons I was removed from my position last year was because I was not a "team player." Essentially, I provide Government oversight for the safety of the Naval Self-Defense Weapon System I am assigned. I had identified some safety requirements that my system was not meeting. Since I would not sweep this fact under the rug like the Program Office people wanted me to, I was let go.

Then didn't they give you two conflicting sets of instructions? I don't understand how anyone could manage safety while at the same time keeping things unsafe. And why wouldn't they want to fix the errors?
