why do people try and make you shake there hand????! !! !
i went to the denist last week and a new guy comes in and saids i'm dr.??? and holds his hand out so i just kind of hold my hand up and wave with a fake smile, he puts his hand closer and says 'you don't shake hands ?", i quietly said no, he saids WHY! i say "just don't".frist of all i was about to have a melt down waiting for him to put his hands and needles in my mouth and pull out a tooth! i didn't think i was at a car lot! i should have said "afraid of germs!"
to day i'm sitting in my own flower shop and two guys walk in (both in suits clearly selling someing)and the frist guy sticks out his hand i leen away and he saids you won't shake my hands? i say "i don't do hand shakes" and he gets mad and said "i'm here to buy some thing, and you won't shake a customers hand!" i said i just don't want you in my space.he walks out.
whats wrong with people why don't i have the right to say when, where , and who can touch me?
am i just a freck??

It's more of a social norm. You're expected and sometimes required to shake somebody's hand when meeting them. Means you're polite.

I only shake hands with people like doctors or some relative I've never met before, and sometimes they'll surprise me into shaking their hand ( if I suspect it I won't shake their hand)by walking up to me saying how you doin' holding out their hand and they startle me into shaking hands with them.

I'd rather give and receive hugs. :O)

Sometimes I wish I had the courage to not be polite and just say this.

Sometimes I think "Maybe the other person doesn't like to shake hands either, but (s)he thinks (s)he has to do it to be polite". Maybe I should ask first "Do you like to shake hands?" and (s)he would say "No" and I would say "Me neither" and we would both be happy.

I just do it whenever someone extends their hands, which is what everyone does I suppose.

I have gotten fairly good at doing it recently. Actually, I never really knew why people where sticking their arms out at me prior to a few months ago. I only learned when my uncle came to shake my hand and extended his arm, while I just sort of looked at him funny, and my mom yells across the room "Dan! Shake his hand!" and starts to look embarressed.

I don't see why a person's age would make any difference.

I hate shaking hands, but meh, it's polite. I never offer it.

I hate to shake hands, but will if I have to. I'm not a germophobe or anything, I just dislike physical contact with strangers. I don't like hugs, either, unless they're from someone I know very well.

I think a quick bow >>> handshakes. People's hands can be disgusting. Plus, there's nothing worse than a handshake gone wrong, like when someone squeezes your fingers before you can even do something, and you're stuck in this terrible position no matter how strong you are. Too bad I live in the west.

I don't like shaking hands too.

Handshaking is a loathsome and stupid custom, steeped in social competitiveness and macho BS. It is utterly unsuited to more placid natures.

Interesting perspective..how is hand shaking a sign of intimidation and power? I see it a more of a simple greeting gesture.
