Old only gains a specific meaning if applied to an object.

So... who/what are we talking about?

People, cars, relationships...?

Well I'm beginning to believe that aging doesn't always contribute to being a number.

I think the way you can tell how old is old is when you notice yourself becoming:
crankier than usual, having trouble with memory, finding wrinkles on your face, finding that you break bones more so than you used to, being more set in your ways, becoming jealous of young people or people you think are young, and plain ole stuborness. That's all I can think of so far.

Old is always older than me. A moving target.

However, I sometimes feel very, very old and jokingly add 400 years on to my real age when talking to others, like I've already seen and heard everything there is to see or hear. Maybe I'm just world weary.

Ok, people.

I love this quote of Mark Twain

Quote:
Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind … it doesn’t matter

That's about my attitude too. It is very much about your own view, what you make out of the circumstances you are in. Even if a body starts to fail someone because of age, it is amazing that their behaviour, their idea of what they want must not be necessarily the stereotype of old. They most likely can't do stuff the same way as 50 years before, but by their perspective, they have... what's it called... a basic enthusiasm and keep an idea of what joie de vivre means.

Like, it's not about what you cannot do, but rather about what you can do.

It's a matter of perception. Add about 25 years to what age you are now, and that's what 'old' will seem like to you. For me (at 40), 65 seems old, but to a 19-year-old, I'd be a dinosaur.

For me it is relative (in relation to me, since I'm the one using the term), as well.
Of course, other people have different ideas in mind when they say it.

Didn't like "young" people much when I was young-to some extent was "grouchy, crotchety, 'set in my ways' old curmudgeon" long before my age caught up with my personality. Wonder what I'll be like many years from now, whether my mind will seem younger or older than my chronological age (and physical condition/appearance).

Know this thread is about humans, not objects-but "old" can be great: a term of endearment & favor rather than derogatory. Many t-shirts of mine are 15-20 years old ! They are falling apart at seams but they are so amazingly comfortable & soft to wear, they're wonderful. New shirts are not as appealing to my senses because they are scratchy/itchy/uncomfy & haven't been sufficiently broken in. I wear the ancient (comfy) shirt underneath the new (pretty) one.

I'm a very strange person, then, going by rainstorm's philosophy. I'm seventeen, but I don't consider 42 to be old at all. The woman in my avatar is almost 45 and I don't think she's old, either. My mum will be 54 this year and she's certainly not old.

Maybe around eighty.

My grandpa always told me, "Life is tough and then you die!"

I always heard "Life if hard with lots of work and sacrifice and just when it starts to get good and you see all your success you die."
Also "Life sucks and then you die" told that to a girl who was complaining to me about something trying to be flirty too but I was PO'd at the time oh well.

When your body can no longer repair itself and organs start to shut down, then you're old.

Otherwise: 42

I'm getting more and more gray hair everyday. I have an age spot on my face and on my belly. I don't think I have any wrinkles yet and my bones don't seem to creak yet.
