Two possible explanations:
1. Someone sent you a PM, you got the notification, then they deleted the PM before you read it.
2. A spammer sent you a PM. Someone else got the same PM and reported it to me. I deleted the spammer account and with it went any unread PMs they sent.

Or it could be all in your imagination. You're delusional and need to seek help immediately. Try standing on your head and singing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow."

That usually works for me.
Though then I start to see flying rainbow cars...

I feel like that when I get a notification that there's a new reply to a watch post & the link I click on takes me to a page saying the post does not exist. I know what happens is the reply that notification was referring too was deleted most likely by the poster because it was a double post or something due to site bugs but it's still annoying because I have to find the thread again sense I'm no longer watching it :x

Reminds me when I have a bunch of notifications on Facebook and I get excited and then... they're all game invites.

Isn't that a part of the Nigerian 409 (I think it was called) scams ?

Yes. I've blocked most IP addresses associate with such scammers but a few occasionally manage to sneak onto the site. They pretend to be a woman who thinks you are an interesting person and that "she" would like to get to know you better and gives you an email address to contact "her". The same PM is sent to lots of members. If a member responds to the email they will find themselves in correspondence with a scam artist. There are gangs of these men who prey on vulnerable people and pretend to be young women. They try to create an online relationship and send photos supposedly of themselves but are just photos harvested from online models or attractive women from facebook or other internet sites. Eventually they want to meet you in person but need the plane fare or have some other "urgent" need for money. If you send them money (typically via Western Union transfer) they befall another incident needing more money and continue to rob you until you figure out it is a scam. Some people have lost thousands to the scammers.

This reminds me, I'm going to be getting a brain transplant soon. They will be removing my defective autistic brain and replacing it with a healthy NT brain, which has been approved of by autizm speeks - please send your donations to Nigeria.
