strange behavior change in cats

Today, our landlord had to come over to install a new sump pump in the basement because there was 4 inches of standing water down there. The cats may or may not have gotten down there, gotten their paws wet and later licked them clean getting all sorts of contamination including rust and petroleum products in their systems.

Anyway, Obi-Wan, the younger male cat is approaching Vala, the older female cat and his tail flicks up and puffs out. Vala backs away and hisses. He'll chase her around the house wildly.

This is a new behavior as of today. It's very strange. Normally they get along very well.

My cat is always strange. Thats why I like her so much.

it sounds like a smell problem,the added basement smells getting on furr could be confusing obi wan.
get a new non smelly cloth,rub vala all over with it for a while,then rub all over obi wan with the cloth.
the idea is to get her smell on obi wan so obi wan knows she isn't bad.
Sisters cat and her kitten used to have this problem since the mum started going out and dragging a load of different smells with her,the smell swapping works for them,am showed them the idea as it's one of the things used to introduce rats to other rats.

If we are talking about assorted strange behaviour in cats, I have a feeling that my cat Lovey is lonely since Clawdia died, and she um...has sympathy for the mice...(we have been noticeing mice lately...she has not wanted to kill them, she is just desperate for non-human companionship....She caught a mouse last night, but was so gentle when she played with it and then very passive when it ran away.

I know I am instilling human-like qualities on animals...but...

I think Lovey would accept a new cat. She has been awfully lonely and attention-seeking lately..
Since Clawdy-waddles died, she has been really clingy and meowy

We were not planning on getting another cat, because we don't want the same thing that happened to Clawdles to happen to the new cat....but after observing Lovey's passivity with the micies, we might kinda have second thoughts.

The funny thing is, that Lovey was always the fiercest hunter of our cats when we had 3 of them.

I would like for her old pal Hatey to visit

we gave her to a friend when w moved, and she does not live very far away.

they are better now.

We think it was redirected aggression because when Vala went out, she sniffed around the neighbor's door and they have a cat so when she came back in, the scent was still fresh on her mind - that of a strange cat she's never encountered before and started thinking of Obi-Wan as the strange cat.

They're now getting along like they used to.

My cats usually get along well. I have known cats to behave strangely after a vet visit if they smell something strange, but they soon become best friends again.

I love it when they get along. Now we don't have to get rid of one or the other.
