Wow, interesting. I like looking at and comparing the related languages. English and Dutch are very close indeed in this particular verse. I'd love to see this verse in Irish, btw.

Not sure if I can identify some of these languages, so I'm gonna have a go.

Quote:
(Bibeln) I begynnelsen var Ordet, och Ordet var hos Gud, och Ordet var Gud.

Is this Swedish?

Quote:

No idea about this one at all. Farsi?

Quote:
(ITB) Pada mulanya adalah Firman; Firman itu bersama-sama dengan Allah dan Firman itu adalah Allah.

And this seems to be related to the one above.

Quote:
(So) Bilowgii waxaa jiray Hadalka, Hadalkuna wuxuu la jiray llaah, Hadalkuna wuxuu ahaa llaah.

Not even gonna try to guess this one. :P

Quote:
(TAB) Nang pasimula siya ang Verbo, at ang Verbo ay sumasa Dios, at ang Verbo ay Dios.

Judging by the numerous loanwords from Spanish, I'd guess this is Tagalog, just as an educated guess.

When I was interested in Irish I had tried looking for an Irish Bible. I hadn't found anything that useful though. However, via a quick search, I found this: http://www.worldscriptures.org/pages/irish.html

Image

This is Welsh of the same passage that's in the photo of the Irish text above.

John 1:1-8 BCN
(1) Yn y dechreuad yr oedd y Gair; yr oedd y Gair gyda Duw, a Duw oedd y Gair.
(2) Yr oedd ef yn y dechreuad gyda Duw.
(3) Daeth pob peth i fod trwyddo ef; hebddo ef ni ddaeth un dim sydd mewn bod.
(4) Ynddo ef yr oedd bywyd, a'r bywyd, goleuni dynion ydoedd.
(5) Y mae'r goleuni yn llewyrchu yn y tywyllwch, ac nid yw'r tywyllwch wedi ei drechu ef.
(6) Daeth dyn wedi ei anfon oddi wrth Dduw, a'i enw Ioan.
(7) Daeth hwn yn dyst, i dystiolaethu am y goleuni, er mwyn i bawb ddod i gredu trwyddo.
(8) Nid ef oedd y goleuni, ond daeth i dystiolaethu am y goleuni.

It's Somali. One of the few Hamitic languages which has Roman script.

My grandmother has a wonderful little Norwegian Bible she inherited from her mother that is over 100 years old. It's written in the Riksmal (Danish-influenced urban Norwegian) of the late 1800s. My Grandmother reads from it on special occasions and John 1:1 in her bible is almost identical to both the Danish and Norwegian versions in the OP.

I have a program called e-sword. Lots of translations are there. All I did was copy and paste.

I thought that was e-sword - someone who was trying to convert me installed that on one of my computers . . .

They shouldn't have done that without asking, but it is a cool program for how much it "costs". Kinda like Open Office.

Hmmm, you have to pay for it?

I thought he downloaded it - I do not recall him bringing a disc. He may have an account, though. He's a Fundamentalist, and doesn't mind spending money on such things.

Also, maybe in Fundamentalism there are huge budgets for proselytizing!

I would not know, I'm not one of their 'success stories'

A point of curiousity, though, as we were discussing elsewhere - why did you place this thread under Random rather than under the Religion and Philosophy heading :?:

Because this is not religious or philosophical, it has to do with linguistics.

Oh, OK, then comparisons between operatic libretti are OK for this topic, right? Those can be really interesting! :D
I mean, even though the topic heading says "Bible" rather than "Linguistics" . . .
