A few months ago, I got a copy of chrono trigger off of Ebay and got my dusty old SNES system out from the basement. I'm not a hard core rpg fan or even much of a video game fan for that matter, but I kept on hearing (on the internet) how incredible crono trigger was and became interested. In my opinion, it is one of the best games ever made. It is one of the few games I have actually played all the way through and beaten.

Has anyone else played or heard of chrono trigger?

No, but I've played on an NES before. What's Chrono Trigger about?

Welcome to WP BTW. :D

The plot of chrono trigger revolves around a group of characters travelling through time to fight (and ultimately destroy) the space parasite lavos that crash landed into earth in 250,000 b.c. that henceforth "guided" evolution to create, and ultimately harvest humans and destroy the world.

That probably didn't make much sense.

The plot is really convoluted. If you have time to burn, you can read the 50-bazillion page wikipedia entry.

"Chrono Trigger" is one of the few RPGs I've replayed more than a few times. I can't really find a darn thing wrong it - the music, the gameplay, the characters, the twists and turns - it really is a perfect game. The plot may be convoluted, but it's definitely very original, consistently entertaining, and a lot easier to follow than it's brain-wrecking sequel "Chrono Cross" (which even after playing twice and reading many synopsises about, still doesn't make a lick of sense to me.)

I think of the one best things about it is how you have to think fourth-dimensionally when traveling between times. Every minor thing you do in the past affects all future time periods. It's one of the few time-travel stories that actually wraps up the paradoxes in the end.

I also like how the side-quests are neatly organized at the end. Instead of digging through FAQs looking for hidden missions (like they have in so many Final Fantasy games,) you have a character telling you where people still need help before you take on the final boss.

If anyone can get their hands on an SNES emulator and a ROM of the game, I highly recommend it for RPG fans.

Well I was thinking that was probably where you got the name "lavos" from. IMO it's one of the best games ever made, next to FF3 (6) in re-playability.

One of the best games ever, I agree.

I am going to cosplay as Lavos at the next sci-fi convention I go to.
It will my first attempt at a cosplay and a tricky one at that. The constume will involve a lot of chicken wire and paper mache.

The game actually contains thirteen possible endings, did you know that?

Yeah, I know about the alternate endings. I didn't play through those, though.

I've heard really mixed opinions regarding crono cross. Some people say it is near chrono trigger's level of quality and playabillity, others say it is an insult to chrono trigger. I've seen screenshots and personally, I hate the graphics. It seems that the PS1 could not deliver the amount of graphic rendering/performance that crono cross "needed", resulting in blocky, angular characters. The graphics are a turn-off, but if it is otherwise a high quality game with good playabillity, I can forgive bad graphics. The problem is, I don't know if it is worth forking over the cash to buy a PS1 and a copy of chrono cross. Sellers on E-bay are asking ridiculous prices for old video games nowadays.

Actually I thought the graphics in CC were quite good. It even had a limited high resolution for the game menus. (Actually I think all 3D characters in PS1 games were angular and blocky, some far worse than others, but honestly, CC was on the better end)

I didn't like Chrono Cross at all. That convention better not have small doors, otherwise you might have a hard time getting in.

Small doors won't be a problem, I'll burst through the floor for added authenticity.

I had two problems with Chrono Cross. One was that it probably had one of the single most complicated stories ever written for a video game. It was intriguing at first because I had no idea what was going on, much like an episode of Lost. But when it got around to answering my questions, the answers were even more confusing, and needed further explanation. And further explanation only made things worse. It was like they were rewriting the story just so they could desperately fill in plot holes as they went along. By the end of the game, I couldn't even remember how it started anymore.

My second problem was the characters. The first game was easy to follow with 6 playable characters, all well-developed with each their own little theme song (Frog is still one of my favorite video game characters ever.) The sequel, however, went completely over-the-top with 45 playable characters, as if the game wasn't confusing enough. Mexican wrestlers, clowns, aliens, rock stars, chefs, skeletons - you can't meet anyone in this game without having them join your team.
