Come here to post ways to limit your impact to the environment so others can share in your discovery and make a difference. I'll start...

I've been watching this show on the History Channel and discovered that the appliances in your home that are in standby (TV, VCR, DVD Player, Computer, Modem, etc.) can be consuming 10-15% of your energy on a daily basis, which is costing a bunch of money and polluting the environment. From now on, I plan to turn the computer and entertainment center off by the power strip, which will completely remove power to everything connected to it. I am also serious about implementing solar panels and maybe wind power generators as well on my home. My Homeowner's Association can kiss my ass.

When in doubt, ask an autistic. Chances are, they're obsessed with what you need to know.

This is a bit large of a project for most, but if you set up solar panels and manage to generate more electricity than you need, I have heard that the eletric company actually buys the surplus back from you.

Would love to go the wind power/solar route here as well.

I saw one being built on TV by that actor Denis Weaver, it was totally off the grid, and made with old tires packed with dirt so it acts like a heat sink,, keeps the house worm in the winter. it looks like a great way to build a house

Blah, blah, blah. We are not to fault for glomal warming. Earth naturally has periods of warming and cooling. During the end of 'mega mammals' Earth increases temperature by 18 degrees F in under 15 years. The earth is casuing global warming. We aren't helping but even if we "go green" it will still continue.

I live in a small down, and I've never driven a mile. I'm one of a few people in the town who ride their bike everywhere they go. The trip to town is only nine miles, and if I start early I can get there easily. :D

One way is to stop using anything that has the word 'fragrance' printed on it.

In the USA, the word 'fragrance' is protected as a trade secret, meaning the contents of the fragrances do not have to be revealed. What they actually contain are petro- and other chemicals, such as benzene, toluene and formaldehyde, plus phthalates, which we are now hearing a lot about.

The European Union has started to ban some of these chemicals, but in America there is much more interest in protecting the interests of its chemical industry than the health of its citizens.

I know this sounds like a conspiracy theory, but it's actually all fully supportable, and you will see more and more info on it in mainstream publications.

If we are so worried about petrochemicals going into our air, we should certainly be afraid to spray them directly onto our skin! :eew:

Toxicity comes in many forms...

Did you know our dihydrogen monoxide footprint is about as large as our carbon footprint?

Not just a green thumb topic

I am all for greening as it is cheaper. Less hydro and gas equals less money spent. I bring my own grocery bags which saves a little. Wasting food is a waste of money. Anything that can save money is easier on the planet. Less is more, in the long run. :)
