I read a thing online (I forget exactly where), this guy who does this thing where he sleeps every three hours for an hour (or something like that)...anyway, before he started doing that, he had some articles on sleeping, one was about making a schedule, where you would always wake up at the same exact time every day. He said as long as you make sure that you always wake on the same time, your body will do the rest and you can just go to bed whenever you're tired.
I've been doing it for a while, and it took a long time to get into it, but now that I'm pretty strict about it, it's a LOT easier for me to fall asleep at reasonable times. Of course, sometimes I'll accidentally sleep through the TV waking me up (I try to hide the remote from myself before I go to sleep), and then I'll screw myself up a bit...but as long as I make sure that I'm up at the same time as usual the next day, I'm back in business (if not a bit groggy for the day).
I also try to make sure that I'm in bed relaxing (reading, TV, or playing Gameboy) for at least an hour before I decide to try to sleep. I try to keep away from anything that's too exciting (anything too actiony or horror and my mind's just racing). Note I said "try"
I fail a lot and then I pay for it in the morning
Anyway, this may or may not work for you...but for me, it sure as heck beats staying up until my eyes won't stay open and then waking up later and later each day.
