I noticed that lots of you aspies here either don't use any instant messengers, or you don't put display your IM usernames in your profiles. This has led me to believe that a lot of aspies must have at least some difficulty socializing online. I may be wrong though... The number of people who I have met on here that I've PM'd that don't use IM's has got me stumped. I personally have no trouble IM'ing people, it's only socializing in person that brings me anxiety.

Why do so many of you guys not use any instant messengers? I figured that most people who owned computers (and especially younger people) all used instant messengers.

I use IM but very rarely, because most of my contacts don't like me very much. The few that do are barely on themselves anyway.

There are some things I like about using IM''s though, and that is the allowance of extra time to think through a response, emoticons so I can express myself better, and the option of having a break and putting my status to away so I am not trapped in a conversation.

I do feel awkward though. Sometimes when I am boring others I can feel it myself. Some people I annoy. A lot of people don't get my riddles. I tend to do plays on words on Im's too

I also think people get annoyed when I go too fast because sometimes I never stop, and people hate big walls of text.

Going on IM's is easier than meeting up in real life; I used to IM often, but it gets so repetitive, and it is boring.

PM's seem to work fine. Why the need for IM's? :?:

Keep in mind that I'm not very computer literate, yet.

I like to use IMs. I have some very good long-distance friends that I keep in touch with that way. Sometimes if I don't feel like typing much, I can use Skype instead.

For IMs, I use MirandaIM for my Yahoo and MSN accounts because it's not loaded with all the ads. It's just text only, and you can get a spam blocker application for it that requires new contacts to verify that they're human.

not aspie, but have a major struggle with using IM,PM,or even direct chat on a forum.
sister and dad both speak to am on msn to find out how am doing here,as am unable to speak it verbally,am also very slow at processing, and get very easily overloaded by information.
sister has no problems with IM,dad does [theyre both aspies],he cant process it fast enough,so can be sat there forgetting what are doing, when suddenly he replies and have no idea why.
as a result of the PMing and direct chat problems,am often post new topics but can never get the awareness? want? [not sure of word to use here] to revisit them even though am fight self to,due to others taking time to read them, though is sometimes more so because am dont know what answers are going to be given so avoid it.
foruming is definitely easier to cope with than IM though,it helps if are speaking to those who are understanding and not the rushing type.

I know it is very popular, but rarely use it myself. Its stressing me a little
for some reason (maybe because i`m not used to it.) But it has happened
a time two that people get really surprised that i dont use it that much,
because they use it alot themselves. It`s a useful tool, but to much of something is
never good. (for me, anyway.)

I don't have any trouble except finding people who're willing to do it for any period of time or more than once :x

A little weird to me with those who have thousands of friends on such
things, it just seems like so impossibly many in a way. An impressive
task to accomplish and keep going.

I'm always on MSN and Yahoo! Messenger. Most people I know have well over 100 contacts but I only have about 30 and I only talk to a few of them regularly.
