My sister used to be in the Juilliard Choral Union and she sang with Andrew Lloyd Webber on the platform at the family memorial service held shortly after the attacks. She later went and volunteered at Ground Zero.

I visited NYC in late Dec. and over New Years 2001-2002. The saddest thing was seeing all of the fliers and posters around St. Paul's Chapel.

I stepped out of the subway station just north of the towers and walked a block to Murray Street, just as the second fireball was going down a little. There were chunks of the airplane and other results of the explosion that it is better not to describe.

Here is what was at Murray Street, and I realized I had to get the hell out of there immediately: :pale:

Wow.

What did you do after you realized you had to get out of there? Did you head back to the subway, try to get a cab, or just run as far as you could go?

I ran north to my office as fast as I could, because I was afraid that there were gas lines running up to the restaurants in Tower 1 (there weren't, by the way), and that the whole building might explode, and kill us all in the street. 8O

Once I got to the office I knew for sure that we were under attack, and that the whole city might be sealed off. It seemed prudent to get out of there immediately, so I ran back to the subway, hoping that I could get home before they blew up the tunnels, too.

Many people were stranded once they started shutting the city down, so I was lucky to get home, and even more lucky not to be there when the buildings came down - that dust was hella toxic! :(

I feel guilty for complaining, because I was not injured, nor did I lose any loved ones. I guess terrorism is so effective because it not only destroys lives, it demoralizes the survivors, and even those who were merely horrified witnesses.

You were smart in getting out when you did. I can't imagine what it would have felt like to be in a building and watching the dust clouds roll down the streets after the buildings came down.

That is total BS when they let people back to work so soon after -and yet were getting sick from the air. Total BS.

I visited New York City for the first time the following year. Me and my friend were walking from Wall street to go see the Statue of Liberty. When we look over to where the towers had been, he asked me if I wanted to go see. I said, "No. I didn't come on vacation to visit a grave site."

We got to see a lot in NYC, but I would like to come back again. There is a lot more I would like to see. Hopefully my friend will still be there for a few more years.

Yeah, it is really a great place! If you plan a trip I'll be happy to give you some food and survival tips before you go.

It's really possible to have a great trip without wasting a lot of money on hotels, food and tourist traps - you just have to know the inside info!

Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom!

Every time you crash the plane,
You blow up buildings and cause pain.

Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom!

Thank you! :)

There is a slim chance I will get back there in the next few years. My friend lives on Long Island, but he is trying to get transfered out.

Ya know something, you should start a NYC appreciation thread. I bet lots of people would have some interesting/crazy/educational/etc stories to tell of that huge city.

Yeah, that's a good idea - I haven't met many people from NYC on WP, but I could probably get some good stories from visitors! :D

When in doubt, ask an autistic. Chances are, they're obsessed with what you need to know.

Well, the collapse of the towers blanketed the area for miles around Manhattan with toxic debris, so the NYSE is no safer than the site itself. :x

(Not meaning to rain on your parade there, Strapples  )

Anyway, I hope you come anyway, you could have a lot of fun here - and I could find you and give you big squishy hugs (as long as you don't wear fragrances)! :D
