Why do we do this? Apparently this is a common thing. Didn't know it was common till I consulted the internets. A regular saying is "someone walked over your grave," kinda feels like something "passes" through or something. Maybe it's not as common around where I'm at, as I get a strange look or comment when I get a "shiver." Anyway, a nice scientific answer to this question would be appreciated! I haven't found that yet, and I would sure as heck like to know. :P

The body shivers to create heat, if it feels it needs it. But guess
it can be other things also.

As for the 5 seconds shivers that suddenly come and go, that some
connect to ghosts and such, can be alot of things. Something chemical
happening in your brain, a thought releazing a bodily effect for example,
a memory, something you see, whatever, this happens without us being
aware of it often. And many automatically go to the spirit world for answers
when they feel something they cant explain right away. Our bodys are
controlled by electronic signals and chemicals mixed together, we are bound to
feel some weird things now and then :)

But it's not caused by the cold air! I wish I could subscribe to the spiritual way of thinking, but I'm not wired that way! :( If someone could describe exactly what goes on in the brain, I'd be happy. Perhaps it is a chemical reaction to a memory not realized, but there doesn't seem to be any real pattern to it, no specific thought causes the shiver, it just happens.

I doesn`t have to be any cold air around, if the body feels
the need for heat, it shivers, cold wind or not. I`m one of those
that just can seem to keep the heat in my body, get cold so
fast, so i shiver alot now and then. I`m shivering now actually
and i`m inside, nice and warm and cozy, but the body isn`t warm
enough.

But, i`m not saying that it isn`t anything spirituall for sure.
That someone else has to decide. Personally, i think its all
electronic signals and chemicals, have both seen and experineced
things that was weird at the time, but traced it all back to the brain.
We still dont know all there is to know about the body, so i would
like to have a complete map of that before i go into the spiritual
sides of things

Ah, I see your point about the body's "need" for heat, rather than it actually being cold. If that were so however, I'd be actually shivering, instead of having a "spaz" of a shiver. I would think anyway. :?

Yes you`re right i think, when its about heat it usually shivers for a while,
not much heat to be gotten from one short shiver, so thats probably something
else

I thought my brother and I were the only people who experience it! We call it "random chills". I found an article that may be of some use:

Myoclonus

I believe that the "random chills" may be a form of this; specifically the "Essential" type.

^
is this whats also called "ticks" or something like that?
have that in the left side of my neck/shoulder, once in
a while it suddenly feels like getting electricity there and
the muscles cramp up and then it goes away - not 100%
sure what it is though, never checked it out, began about
15 years ago. Experinece that as very different from the
shivering-sensation, muh more intense, painful, and shorter

""The most common time for people to encounter them is while falling asleep (hypnic jerk)""
this i get almost every night, it would almost feel weird if it
didnt happen i think, but this is the first thing i have ever read
about it, or seen a name on it

Actually, i think i remember the first time i got the "cramp"-thing
in my neck/shoulder, i bent down, grabbed a tv, lifted it and stood up,
and then my head hit the slanted ceiling behind me that i didnt know
about and i just slammed the tv into my chin since my head suddenly
stopped, almost knocked myself out :) and then i suddenly got a twitch,
and here i am today, 15 years later, still twitching (might not have been
the first time, but the first i remember)

edit -
"""Myoclonus may develop in response to infection, head or spinal cord injury""

Well, that explains it all :) have had my share, and your share, and then some
of those injurys so makes sense

When it happens to me, I get strange looks, and my brother usually thinks it's me being wierd. It happens often enough that I've noticed it, and the reaction. When reading on the internet, I've seen it written that it is somewhat common, but I too have never seen anyone have quite the same thing for no reason at all. Interesting article, tho I'm not sure if that describes exactly what goes on. For me it starts at my neck and works it's way down the right side. Can almost say I feel it at my ear at first, runs down me from there. What's described in that link is a "twitch" or "jerking" motion, and frankly I don't think it quite fits what I have experienced, tho it may be related.

Like your other symptoms this could very well be caused by seizures. Have you made an appointment with a neurologist yet?

There is a forum on the epilepsy foundation website where you can post your symptoms and see how many people experienced the same

I get two things that seem to fit this, but also seem different from each other.

After reading about hypnic twitches, I know that I get that occasionally when I fall asleep (because it wakes me up). It feels like I'm about to fall off the bed and I'm trying to catch myself. It's always in just my leg.

The other thing feels different. It seems to happen at completely random times. I get a chilling reaction which makes me jerk my upper body for about a second. Maybe that's the "essential" myoclonus.
