I've always found it odd, and a bit disconcerting, that the next door neighbors constantly shout at their boy but never talk to their girl. (I don't know them but my bedroom window is about 5 feet away from their house). The girl is around 5 years old and I just heard her name for the first time this summer.

Well today someone told me that both children are deaf. So I'm guessing that maybe the boy can hear a little bit - hence the shouting, but the girl can't hear at all. Which is why her parents never speak to her. You can't see sign language through a covered window and thick brush.

There are a couple of partially deaf boys that live in my cul-de-sac. Ironically, one of them made fun of me for stimming, and I was thankful that his dad came outside and spanked him for it.

Problem with screaming at deaf children so they can hear you can make neighbors think you are abusing them so they call social services because they were unaware your children are deaf. People do jump to conclusions without even trying to figure out what is really going on.

You haven't heard what they are screaming. They are abusive to that boy, enough to screw him up. but unfortunately not enought to get CS involved

His dad once screamed "open the door, open the damn door" for about 10 minutes straight, then punished the boy because he, you guessed it, opened the door for his dad.

his mom's cool though and now his dad isn't around much so I don't find myself constantly running outside to check on him

I've been staying with relatives in Minnesota for the summer and there's a yellow sign on the next block that says "Deaf Child". Another couple of blocks away there's one that says "Autistic Child". I think I've seen a blind one too.

Isn't that dangerous to have a sign up with autistic child and dead child? They could both walk into them and do some serious damage. j/k

Is advertising something like this necessary?

All that shouting would drive me crazy. If he partially deaf, I would start shouting saying his shouting has made me go dead so I can no longer hear myself think

The signs are necessary because they raise caution. You know this "watch children" signs - they only put them up when their is a child with limited intellectual capacity. Thats why people often can't get them near playgrounds.

We will be getting a deaf child sign on our street. The reason they are deeming it necessary is the one neighbor loves to fly down our 15 mph road at 65 mph and they think this will help him realize that the children, one of which already has a tendency to walk out in front of cars, can't hear him coming - with his speed they certainly can't see him coming.

I wish they'd just go back to putting up the guardrail - they actually put up 3 guard rails and a fence to keep this guy from having access to our road via his driveway. He tore them all down. From what I've seen I honestly can't figure out why he hasn't killed himself yet. Ever know anyone who has gotten a 4 wheeler stuck up in the air between two trees - 3 times. Flipped their truck on its side 50+ times in 2 months because they routinely tried to drive it up the same hill. Has a giant hole in the side of their house because they hit the house repeatedly (on accident) while trying to clear the land around their yard. Need to clear the land around their yard every year, because rather than clearing it once and then mowing it, they clear it and then let it grow until next year. Ever know anyone who hit a gas line and over the stench of the gas was shouting out to his friend "Its okay. keep digging. That's not the gas line. The gas line is over there somewhere." If you don't I can introduce you to someone who all this applies too. And a whole lot more of equally intelligent experiences as well
