""This wasn’t about the girl developing hair early — it was the mother’s obsession with wanting her daughter to be a supermodel""

I am greatly disturbed by parents' attempts to live vicariously through their children, especially when it infringes on the child's individual identity and autonomy, as in this example.

Quote:
. . . because they are younger when they develop, girls nowadays may be growing hair at an earlier age.

“It’s not uncommon for girls to get their period at 9 or 10 years old, and with that development comes increased hair growth,” said Dr. Doris Pastor, a clinical associate professor of pediatrics at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.

This trend of increasingly early onset of puberty has been going on for quite some time. During my youth, adults were alarmed that it had become normal for girls to begin menstruation at 11 - 13 years of age.

I think we need to find out why this is happening before it reaches a point where it could endanger the children's health.

I went to school with a girl who went through puberty at the age of 7 due to a rare medical condition; she said that there were a lot of unpleasant physical complications, not to mention the obvious social fall-out.

Reminds me very much of an episode of The Twilight Zone called "Number Twelve Looks Just Like You." I think before too long that scenario will become a very close reality.

Normally, I'm one to say live and let live. But that's fairly horrifying. They're just little girls. At that age, no one should be looking there, if there's actually anything there. That borders on obsessive.

And those parents need to spare the self-esteem talk that they use in the article. That's not a reason; it's an excuse.

well, I agree that they are too young for this kind of stuff, as women do this on themselves for adult reasons I suppose. However, in the case when kids would laugh at a girl for having hair down there, it makes sense.

Not really, all it does is a teach a kid to be a weenie who crumples under the slightest amount of pressure.

America is altogether too insane about women having hair on their bodies. We're mammals. That means the females of our species are going to have boobs and hair. America loves boobs. Yet the culture likes to pretend the hair doesn't even exist and any woman who goes unshaved in public is generally treated with disgust. It's bizarre. Boobs good; hair, bad.

O...kay...

So, where will CPS be when the child is found murdered and molested by a trusted adult in her basement...?
Seriously, what the hell is wrong with parents these days?! Why are these idiots allowed to breed, creating more generations to neglect in an already overpopulated world?! Bad homes make bad people, and trying to make a pre pubescent eight year old "sexy" is, in my book and, I hope many others, BAD.

Bad idiot parent, bad! *Whacks parent on the head with rolled up newspaper*

There goes several children's childhoods.
I bet they get started in the intercourse area early.

Bring on young teenage parents. :?

The sad part is that these people will reproduce much faster than those with more normal sensibilities, and within a few generations will have completely supplanted more sensible ideas.
