Canon shutters 80-year history of film cameras

Canon announced Wednesday it would end sales of its EOS-1v, the last remaining model of film camera that the company has sold in Japan. The company’s film cameras, which symbolize Canon’s old-time roots, will come to the end of their 80-year history.

As the sales of film cameras have been on a decline due to the spread of digital cameras, the company stopped the production of the EOS-1v in 2010 and currently is shipping its remaining stock.

The company said it will continue to accept repair orders and other customer inquiries until Oct. 31, 2025, even after finishing selling the product.

Canon’s film cameras have a sales history of about 80 years since the company’s predecessor released the Hansa Canon in 1936, having developed it from a prototype.

I still have a certain nostalgia for film photography, even though I've used mostly digital for the last decade. There was a certain excitement about finally seeing your prints, not quite knowing what would be on them, and having to carefully consider whether each shot was worth the cost of film and processing. I often forget that so many of the people around me will never have experienced that.

I wouldn't like to be without auto-focus and multi-program exposure control these days for most of the photography that I do, but I still run the odd roll of Ilford XP through a couple of old rangefinder cameras now and then. I definitely end up taking shots which I wouldn't normally with my digital SLR - they make me see differently somehow.

I wish I had the time to get into photography. We have an enlarger, and I think we might have a camera or two somewhere...I've seen some of the photos my grandfather took, and they look so good on B&W 8x10. It is literally impossible (with today's technology) to get that look with digital prints.
