I'm gonna join the gym to do cardio and whatever they offer in terms of yoga or stretching and pilates or whatever then I'm going to take it home and do some lifting with a home gym I'm buying.

Do you think that's an okay idea or should I do everything at the gym for safety's sake?

reason I want a home work out system is so I can do it in some privacy and so I don't have to wait for a piece of equipment.

I also looked at a decent bike today. It'll take me a little while to get my size and weight down to be able to comfortably ride a bike but when I was a teenager, I rode my bike everywhere and I lost 70+ pounds during a summer because of it.

I do it at home, save time and its easy to just go and work out
+ no people, just learn what to do and not do, lots of great tips
on the net. Just watch that back :) carefully, important to do it
right. Example, i took a small room in the basement and use it
for training. Much easier to be motivated when i dont have to
go anywhere, its always 30 seconds away and open 24/7
and free, of course

free minus the cost of the equipment, of course.

Yes, forgot that. But those gyms aren`t cheap :)
its an investement, sell it when your done, and you
dont need all the fancy machines, just the basics
and some elbowgrease. Hell, you can use plastic
cans with water or sand as weights for example,
no problem. Keep it simple and effective

That is so true, it might feel really boring to get
started, but when its done i always feel a little better,
the brain seem to like it, and it has nothing to do with
being happy with my own body at all, because that
i despice with an almost unbelivebal strength, life
just "feels" a little better for a while

I go to Gold's Gym. A home gym never gave me a good workout (lack of basic equipment such as squat rack), plus I met some great peeps at the gym.

Its nice when theres someone to train with without
it feeling uncomfortebal.. you have a point there.
Another reason i do it alone, is all the people at
the gym, hard to focus

If you have the money a gym is good. Bikes in the home can tend to get dusty. Gyms have variety and the pressure of others to inspire you. Home has TV and chips.

I joined a gym last year and regretted it. I have to get myself into the mode again (ugh, just so lazy!! no excuse!) but once I do, I will be doing aerobics in front of the tv.. I did that for a while and it was working well.. why did I stop?? Got distracted? Too much to do? Felt like doing other things in my spare time? Well... none of those excuses sound any good, so I have none! Gotta get back into it!

That wouldn`t fit me at all, i would never get to work out :)
For me its the opposit, guess it just depends on each persons likes and dislikes
But i have to mention about the variety, i hear that alot that it costs so much
and you need so much different stuff so its just not worth it trying at home, and
i just cant agree, you can come along way and have variety with just basic stuff
and a little imagination, i`ve been doing it that way for many years so its not only
theory. The pressure of others... that would probably kill me, put on top of how i
pressure myself so sounds a little scary :) the time-thing is another thing for me,
if i go to a gym i have to drive 15 minutes to the gym and 15 minutes back + parking
et cetera, thats a 45 minute workout lost every time 8O

This thread reminds me of a line from Married with children or something;
"have you ever had one of those days, lifting weights, a pretty girl walks by
and suddenly you think "oh gee, i think i`ll start todays work out with a
1000 pound weight", and then when your back goes out and she asks "are you ok
mr?" you pop up in agonizing pain, smile and say "I`m ok"
