hey does anyone know how to shrink pictures so they can be avatars?

Yes. I use MsPaint.

1) Copy/Paste image into Paint.
2) Select Image pull-down.
3) Select Stretch/Skew function.
4) Determine shrinkage percentage, and enter values in the appropriate Stretch boxes.
5) Select Ok.
6) Save resulting image in appropriate format.
7) Upload to favorite website.

Irfanview

1.- Image > Resize (CTRL-R )
2.- enter size (leave checked "preserve aspect ratio")
3.- save (change quality to get smaller file size)

I found one of the better ways is to use photobucket so which alows it easier as paint can be a bit hard on larger pictures and you may not get the dimensions right and could be streched.
