This is what I went through last night, folks. We normally get thunderstorms this time of year, but this was bad even for us. We had hurricane force winds and more lightning than I've ever seen at one time! 8O I'm okay and I have power, but the trip to work might be interesting this morning.

Only the first 12 pictures in the slideshow are from last night's storm.

No tornados, just extremely violent wind.

I want to reassure everyone that I'm okay; the area I'm in was not hit this bad. We had very heavy rain, a lot of wind, and the scariest lightning I've ever seen. The entire sky was lit up continually by the lightning. 8O I had trouble getting to sleep because of the noise and the constant flashing light (even through closed blinds).

Here's another story. The link titled "See the storm from east Phoenix as it pounds the valley" gives one the best idea of how bad it was. Stick with it through the first lame video -- there are better videos after that one.

Wow. That's incredible lightning!

I've only experienced one storm in my life with lightning like that. I can't remember if it was quite as frequent as the video above but it was close. I just remember that the lightning had a strobe effect on the motion of the trees making the scene look like something out of an old choppy-animation horror film. The trees looked like they were coming alive with the wind thrashing them around so violently. It was incredibly freaky.

Incredible, with a nice light lightning show tonight... didn't get much up the hill other than wind and noise - pretty scary!

That's what it looked like in my area. It was scary.

What area of the state are you in, makuranososhi?

Did you get much of a storm Thursday night? I seem to remember it was coming from roughly your direction.

While running errands today, I had to go to the part of Tempe that got hit really hard. There were downed trees and broken branches everywhere. I lot of big, healthy trees were blown over. They had done a lot of cleanup already, but there was still a lot of debris. I saw one saguaro that had been destroyed, which is always sad considering how long they take to grow (they have to be at least 50 years old before growing their first branch). The traffic light at the intersection I had to go to was still out.

Yep, it's been pretty intense the last couple of days. And more to come so I hear. Oh yay!

Damn, my parents told me the lightning was that bad, but I didn't get to witness it. I looked out my window frequently. Hm, maybe the wrong area. I'm in Surprise.

Mostly blow-over, it hit up here the day or so before with less intensity... when I came down, looked like a lot of damage in just the few areas I went through.

Out our way (I'm in Avondale) the lightning was mainly above the cloud layer. And it looked like a strobe light up there! It was cool...

Here's another article with the extent of the damage and some info on just what happened to produce such a storm.

We're supposed to have rain all day tomorrow and thunderstorms on Monday. Happy joy.

We have storms frequently in the summer, but this one was unusually severe. If I started a thread every time we had a storm, I'd wear my fingers out from typing!

Oh yeah, well storms are getting worse as the suns solar flares are going wild and getting closer to earth.. the ice on a couple of planet are melting so Earth isn't alone in this.. it ISN'T; however, due to the greenhouse affect.. thats a lie.
