Well apparently it's natural disaster week.
There is an enormous fire on one side of us. It has been burning since Thurs. They have evacuated the houses east of town, (we are west).
I have the horses haltered and in the smaller paddock. The cats are in their carriers. The rabbits are in their carriers. The dogs are underfoot.
We are packed, food (us and critters) and clothes. We have a landing place at my Grandparents old farm 80 miles away. My aunt and uncle were gracious enough to offer use of the place if we have to go. Room for us and animals.
All is prepared and well, except for two things;
- I have four horses and a two horse trailer.
-Another fire started with a lightning strike about two hours ago, on the other side of us.
My father has commandeered another two horse trailer from my old science teacher (and friend of the family.) Problem is; he is 80 miles away too. My folks are a little reluctant to make the drive if there isn't an official order to evacuate specifically for where we are.
The Plan right now, (if there is and evacuation order), is to call my folks, then load up the two young mares in our trailer. My husband will haul them out. Then I saddle my curly gelding (with all of 5 rides on him. Yee haw!), and pony (lead) the yearling gelding from the saddle. My dad will meet us on the road...eventually... Please bear in mind my father (a fire fighter) approved this plan.
We can't leave early because my husband is on call at the local hospital this weekend. We have one vehicle running (other is in the shop), and thank god the working one is the truck. Other wise I would be making haul-em-pony-n-critter trips right now.
Everything is done that can be. My house is spotless. We are soaking everything. I'm just pacing and twiddling my thumbs.
Cop just went screaming by on the highway. There are fire trucks, and planes and helicopters... It's nuts right now and so am I.
Better go and check dispatch. I'll try to update for those who may be interested. What a cruddy week.
