For a while now I've been wanting to cut my hair. It's been long for about 5 years... used to be about 2 foot but more recently I've trimmed it down to a fairly short ponytail. I'm done with the hassle of having long hair, finding long hairs on my shirt, my bed, my floor, the shower, etc., plus it's a pain to wash it all.

I'm still wondering whether to have it done professionally (which hasn't really satisfied me in the past) or to just wing it and do it myself, or maybe have one of my brothers do it.

I'm looking for a good haircut to make a reasonably seamless transition from ponytail to short hair... The only example of this I can think of, maybe some of you are fans of the "Highlander" series... Duncan MacLeod had a ponytail throughout the series, but in the movie "Endgame" he had it cut short, and it was a perfect transitional haircut. You almost forgot the ponytail wasn't there. That's what I'm aiming for. Short, but not a military cut or anything that would make my prominent left ear too noticeable.

Suggestions? How many inches to leave on, where to cut it short, which parts to leave longer?

I'm not exactly looking to copy the aforementioned Highlander haircut. I basically just want to look like a normal guy.

...i dunno if this will help, but about 10 years ago i had hair long enough to sit on. i kind of freaked out one day and shaved it all off except for my bangs. i still just have bangs. best thing i ever did.

no more long hairs in the carpet/on the furniture. no more rolling my hair up in car windows. no more "ow, yer on my hair!"

i didnt go to the "smooth transition" cut. i figured i get stared at all the time anyways, why do anything subtle. my mom cried. *shrugs* i still like it...except for the pesky grey in the sides now... :?

my suggestion, get someone you know to play with a cut for you. doesnt have to be a professional. and if you dont like it, it's hair...it'll grow back. :)

IMHO, bald guys rock. :P

This might not be any help, but personally
i wake up, shower and just pull the hair back.
Easy fast and clean cut. This reminds me,
i need a haircut, getting a little too long.

Heres something i dont recommend, shave
one side of your head, cut the other side short
and die it black, keep some long hair on the
top, die that white and make braids of it so they
hang down over the the others stuff :)
yep, i did that, looked so bad

My long hair defines who I am... I would never chose to cut it off... and, at 64, I'd never be able to grow it back again :)

If i were you i would shave my head clean just to break
that thought :) hair becomes a habbit, what if you
suddenly had to shave it for some reason.. :) would
that break you, take away who you are? I dont think
so anyway, its just hair, i dont think it defines who you
are but i understand that you do. Had long hair for many
years and it felt impossible to cut it off, got so attached
to it. So i cut it off to break that line of thinking :D felt
great! Suddenly i didnt understand why i had cared so
much or been so stressed about it, it was just hair
(guess i`m just thinking loud here, not telling you you have
to shave your head or anything) :) non of my buisness

-----edit
this got me thinking and i looked at some old pics, i can not
belive i had so much hair when i look at it now :) and that
i worried so about cutting it off - good to get rid of

Yeah, I have gone from long to short at least once before, and I cringe at some of my old pictures. "How could I have thought that was a good look?"

Hair is a habit. And when I got a foot cut off, I think I went through a withdrawal phase. I felt naked, without my "privacy curtain." Gonna get a better cut this time than I did last, though. Maybe I'll have it done as early as tomorrow, just get it over with.

One time when my brother was getting his hair cut by my mum the plastic bit broke off the razore thingy and with one swoop he had an anti mohawk. She then had to cut the rest down to a simular length so he was bald, he was very upset about it, it was realy too bad as that time was shave for a cure so he could have done it for charity if he planned it. It was funny but I realy was not alowed to laugh as I know how easily it could have been me, but I think he said there were some good points to it though. I wish I could get my hair a bit longer but it is realy curly and turns into a bit of an afro, but the more I get the better it is, I have been able to avoid my mum on this subject for a while and hopefully even more as whenever it is cut too much is taken off.

Personally i know i used the hair to "hide" in a
way - something i could hide behind , or at least
it felt like it. Now i have a easy pulled-straight
back-without-the-ponytail kinda thing and love
it, takes no time and needs little maintnance,
and i don`t feel like i`m "hiding" in that way
anymore :D that i like

Alot of those guys look quite sad, I know a bit of how they feel, I am never happy with my haircut, I like length and without it I feel like I am missing something. But my hair usualy grows up and puffy with a bit at the ack going down (mullet. But I also have a goatie, and not one of those fake ones that people call a goatie, I have a strip that gos straight down and does not take up the whole chin. I kind of feel like I am hideing behind it but I think hey it is not a common thin and I think it builds a kind of unique look. I might cut it in the future but at the moment I like it, the kids at school liked it as depite being one of the younger ones I grew some of the best facial hair.

I`ve heard that when your hair has its
own motto, its time for a cut

Especially if its "Buisness up front, Party in the back"

:)

Same here... that's why I keep it in a ponytail :)

Ha ha, yeah, I've never been a "smooth transition" kind of guy. My hair's either long, or it's 3/4" buzzed. Going from short to long is the only transition you'll catch me in...and I'm sure most people will agree with me when I say it's not a pleasant one :x

I had that problem the first time I cut mine, but the other two times I didn't have any problem at all.

I hate having long hair. When my hair touches my ears, it irritates me. It was getting pretty long until about this time yesterday.

I much prefer short hair. Mine is so short now that all I have to do to dry my hair is to run my fingers through it. I wish it would stay this way forever.

I like having short hair, as you also have tot hink that by changing your hairstyle you can change your overall appearence too. I used to have it verrrrrrry long indeed when i was 7, basically my mum had only ever trimmed my hair, not cut it, and my hair grows very fast. but then I had it cut by a professional hairdresser and the change was remarkable, everyone said I looker much smarter and that it suited me, whilst for years they'd complained about how long it was
and also, that army haircut video is very depressing  I was watching all the guys faces and some look like they're about to burst into tears
