okay. i heard in school today numerous rumours of an experiment being conducted trying to recreate the conditions of the big bang. iv also heard numerous times that this could mean either a black hole being formed and sucking all matter in local to it or it could mean that the big bang is created and the earth explodes . the second one seems less lightly to me. anywho. according to the media some pipe lines have been built 15 miles underground across Europe. Tommorow, wednesday september the 10th. Some scientests will be firing particles anticlockwise round this pipe line and some say they are firing them oposit directions to make them smash into each other but i got from what i read that they are firing them in the same direction. as for the theory of a black hole being formed. i think it developed from a misunderstanding of the big bang, the big bang was created "by" a black hole where the particles collided inside it thus creating the big bang thus meaning that the pipes underground will be creating the same conditions as there are in a black hole to send the particles flying and light speed yada yada so on so fourth. anywho. i believe people have misunderstood and thought that the black hole came after the big bang . Thus meaning there would be no threat to the earth from a black hole being made via this experiment. Am i right or is there actually a possability that everyone could die tommorow?

heres where i read about it in school after hearing the rumours: http://www.reuters.com/article/wtMostRe ... 8920080908

Nobody will die tomorrow or any time soon fromt the LHC. I don't they are doing high power collisions until October. There is a theoretical chance of creating minute black holes which will evaporate immediately. The energy of the collisions is less than some of the cosmic radiation particles that bombard the Earth every day in cosmic radiation and neither the Earth or other planets in our solar system have suddenly gone bang or been converted into a black hole as a result.

it's not what everyone thinks it is.

It's a time travel experiment. They're going to send something back in time. Apparently, the scientists received a canister of barium that has the same ID tag on it that another one in their facility has. They checked the decay rate and it's +11 years.

If Global Warming doesn't wipe out all life on earth, scientists will ! !!

~Bwhahahahahahaaa~

(All the LHC will do is collide atoms at nearly the speed of light. A physicist once said that this is like smashing watches together to study how the gears fit together.)

really? i heard a thing about that on richard and judy or this morning or somthing like that once. a guy thought he could go back in time by making an atom spin round at the speed of light... didn't understand how myself . also, that sounds exactly like what these guys have explained however the guy said the machine would have to be left on and you could only travel back to when it was left on from and beyond. but still. i didn't understand the decay date sentance. would you mind explaining it to me?

also, to quote: A physicist once said that this is like smashing watches together to study how the gears fit together.
now is it just me or does that sound like somthing an ape would do to conduct an experiment? ;p. no seriously, i can really see it now. an ape smashing two watches together. it'd be kinda funny .

A better description than watches would be lego. All the universe is made of big chunks of lego. By smashing all the lego things together and looking at the bits you get to find individual peices of lego and finally know what they look like, maybe even learn how they fix together without falling apart. Somewhat of a simplification but should help someone with no scientific background to understand what they are doing.

I was following the first post until someone fell away and went into "yadda yadda yadda" now I have no idea what you are completely on about ... Please don't just go into conversation then finish with "blah blah blah"
It's just as bad as when someone makes noises on the phone when they are deciding what to order, it's annoying.
