So I get a call today from my sister, telling me that she's pregnant. She and her husband are finally having a baby. It was a really surreal moment because she's the first in my family to reproduce, and probably gonna be the only one for a while. I'm nowhere near ready and at the rate he's going my brother will probably die alone.

And while I'm totally not ready to be a father, I am more than ready to be an irresponsible uncle!

I've got it all planned out.

Born - baby blanket (like my godmother gave me)
1st birthday - construction paper and Crayola markers (i'm taking it on myself to nurture this kid's creativity)
2nd birthday - Ray Charles CD with "Hit the Road Jack" on it
3rd birthday - a Nintendo Wii with every Mario and Zelda game ever downloaded onto it
5th birthday - Star Wars (If it's a girl, Labyrinth. The child must grow to worship Jim Henson)
10th birthday - Indiana Jones
12th birthday - Lord of the Rings (extended edition)

By the way, in case you haven't noticed I am making damn sure I turn my future nephew/niece into a fellow geek, which will no doubt drive my sister and her husband crazy. They're both marine biologists, so they're technically nerds (geeks without the whimsy). But I'll be damned if they raise this kid on Dora the Explorer!

Congrats! :)

I have 6 nieces and nephews. Being an aunt (or in your case, an uncle) is rewarding, but it can also be challenging.

I am not the father.
