At least 1/4 of the population in the States and Canada is comprised of rednecks, but I wonder, are there rednecks in Europe? I can't picture there being any of them really.

For example, it wouldn't seem right to see someone in Germany, Finland, France, Spain, etc. to say "howdy partner" and drive around in a beaten up old truck while smiling with big buck teeth. You picture it in Alabama, Texas or Kentucky but not in Europe.

I just somehow can't picture people who look like this as living in Europe:

If there aren't any rednecks, why? Why would there be rednecks here and none there?

I think they're called chavs.

People from Saskatchewan and Alberta are just as redneck as Manitobans, if not more.

When I went to Alberta I saw a bunch of people wearing cowboy hats and saying 'howdy'. You hardly ever see that here.

Rednecks are everywhere and you can't run away from them :D

Our country is FULL of them (my family too, unfortunately) but we don't have any special name for such a person like redneck, hilly billy or hick.

Chavs - also known by the regional variants townies, neds, schemies, bazzas or spideys - are probably the UK's equivalent of rednecks, but are a completely different social group. Chavs are characterised by:

  • generally being unemployed despite usually being physically and mentally fit to work (the latter being quite subjective, it seems). Those that do work are in the low-paid, low-brainpower jobs: McDonalds, hairdressing etc. Most will have at one point aspired to be a footballer/soccer player (delete as appropriate to your side of the Pond) or other celebrity, but with no willpower or drive to make any kind of sacrifices it's usually a non-starter;
  • very distinctive appearances - designer sportswear (often fake), baseball caps (mandatory for the male of the species), short hair for the males (usually bleached blond like role model Eminem) but not bald, and LOTS of cheap tacky jewellery. Also fond of mimicking hip-hop fashion despite usually harbouring racist tendencies;
  • insatiable appetite for junk food and alcohol;
  • extremely limited tastes in media:
    • TV is limited to soap operas, confrontational daytime TV shows, and of course reality TV. Anything even vaguely resembling a documentary is strictly out of bounds;
    • books don't exist as far as chavs are concerned, most haven't picked one up since they left school;
    • music limited to gangsta rap, hardcore techno (not to be confused with real hardcore as in Rise Against, which would give a chav a brain haemorrhage) and whatever the manufacture-a-star reality shows churn out. Rock, metal and just about anything that predates 1980 likely to be met with venomous hatred;
  • violent tendencies towards anyone who looks, thinks or dresses differently (especially goths or anyone who could be mistaken for a goth - of course, not when there's only 3 of them and 2000 of us assorted goths/metallers queuing up outside the Carling Academy to go see Nightwish, as I discovered in March - they usually shit their pants and creep away quietly :wink: )
  • chavs are at the centre of the "Brits abroad" stereotype - they go to Spain/Greece, stick to their own British pubs (incidentally, the Union Jack now serves the same purpose historically served by the Jolly Roger), stick to the same stuff they'd eat and drink at home (just eat and drink more of it), and wonder why the locals won't speak bloody English.
  • and here's the good news - short life expectancy.

Wild shot in the dark, i`m guessing you have never been here :)
its just people here as there, its the same thing - eccept we dont
care so much about nudity or go insane if someone shows off some
tits :) i never get that part of the US, the fear of naked people,
that morality-thingy i hear about that you have so much of
(but porn is big, go figure)

"""say "howdy partner" and drive around in a beaten up old truck while smiling with big buck teeth"""

you should see some of the people around here :lol:
