So after years of speculation Clay Aiken has come out of the closet and admitted he's gay. He said his reasoning was that he wanted to set a good example to his newborn son and show that it's best to be honest with yourself and the world around you. I think this is a very mature decision on his part and I sincerely wish him the best.

I confess I've mocked male pop stars LIKE Clay Aiken quite a bit in the past. Back when I was in high school and groups like N'Sync were the bane of my existence I always found it weird that so many of my female classmates fawned over a group of guys who looked so GAY. I mean jesus, the frosted hair and the matching outfits? How can you not find that funny? But then Lance Bass came out of the closet and I felt like a jerk. It's only funny if the guys LOOK gay but claim to be straight! If one of them's actually gay it kills the humor, because how can I knock a guy for being honest?

So here are the rules for coming out. If you are quite obviously gay and not only refuse to come out of the closet but actually go out of your way to prove how much you like women (Tom Cruise, John Travolta, etc), it's open season on your ass. It's not because we think you being a bathhouse homosexual is funny. It's because you're living a lie and you're trying to empart that lie upon us like it's the truth and expect us to believe it.

If you're obviously gay and come right out and just admit it, we can't knock you for that. We can knock you for other stuff (bad movies, bad music, etc) but we can't knock you for being honest.

Also, if you're obviously gay and dedicate yourself to marginalizing gay issues (like Larry Craig or Ted Haggard), I invoke the Barney Frank rule and it's open season on your ass as well.

So concerning Clay Aiken, I think his music sucks and if I'll gladly mock one of his terrible songs if it ever comes on the radio (that goes for N'Sync too). But teasing him for acting gay is a no no from now on. That's off the table.

Ha Ha. My dad used to say the same thing about all the 80's glamour metal bands...all the long hair, spandex, and make-up. I kind of miss those girly looking boys. They were hot.

Larry Craig: the most (in)famous thing to come out of Idaho since Napoleon Dynamite.

On topic: I've always speculated about Clay. I bet now all his "claymates" (read: fangirls) are really disappointed.

well first off http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/ar ... areer.html

now that that's out of the way, one of the things Scientology promoted back in the 70's (i don't know if they still believe do) was that they could cure homosexuality. there were rumors that John Travolta (along with Tom Cruise) joined Scientology to cure him of his gay desires so it wouldn't ruin his movie career. there are also rumors that his marriage to Kelly Preston (who's also a Scientologist) was arranged to throw off gay rumors.

Tom Cruise i think is a much more extreme example. he's been notoriously combative with tabloids who spread gay rumors about him. gay rumors are almost a rite of passage in Hollywood, but Cruise has launched million dollar lawsuits against these publishers for damage to his image. the dude has launched MILLION DOLLAR LAWSUITS to combat gay rumors! i dunno what's going on there but it's clearly something.

getting cheeky for a second, watching Staying Alive or Interview with a Vampire and tell me either Travolta or Cruise are straight. seriously, if Tom Cruise wants people to think he's straight maybe he shouldn't appear in books written by Anne freaking Rice!

Ahaha. Shall we resurrect them, wrinkles, liverspots, bald an' all?
Kinda funny that now that Rob Halford's "out" he's taken Judas Priest's image in a completely opposite direction. I don't think it's an effort to "distance" the band from his preference either, but nearly the opposite, a reflection of his real self. Strange.

And to jamesohgoodie, I agree with you on Larry Craig and the Barny Frank rule, but why knock someone who's trying to "hide it" if they are simply hiding it? There is valid reason for hiding it, ruination of a career ain't no frickin' picnic...

to me there's a difference between "trying to hide it" and "launching a multi-million dollar lawsuit trying to hide it". there's also "spending tens of thousands of dollars to take out an ad trying to hide it" as Richard Gere and Cindy Crawford did.

if you're willing to spend ridiculous amounts of cash just to let the world know you don't like dudes then we're entitled to mock you just a tad.
