Beyond having had a rock polisher as a kid, I know nothing about it, but that sounds like a great hobby. :D I've long wanted to learn to whittle wood myself. I don't know why or even what I'd want to make. It just seems like a nice hobby.

There was a documentary about the stone spheres of Costa Rica where they demonstrated the use of smaller, rounded stones from a river to pound a boulder into a smoother round shape.

You are probably looking for modern tools though like diamond tipped cutting devices or similar.

Do a search on Rock Hounds. Rock hounds are rock hobbyists, you may find a group close to you. In some places they even have club-Houses! Yay, you could be a 'joiner'! They go out and dig up rocks, bring them home shape them and polish them. They would be your best-cheapest source for information and sourcing of the steps to getting a final product of a single stone or pointing you to the tools and equipment needed to begin a hobby. If you have stones that are already cut but you want them to be shaped to set them in jewelry for instance, look up Lapidarists. Some Rock Hounds are of that higher skill set- Lapidary.

I used to work for a company that made counter tops from concrete. One of my jobs was to polish the concrete prior to sealing, delivery and installation. We used a pneumatic power grinder with diamond pads and water feed. Polishing Stone is the same, the differance between stone and concrete is that we only took the concrete up to a #400 grit pad, while stone countertops and gravestones are taken up to #5,000 and #10,000 grit to get a mirror finish.
