Haven't seen my GP/doctor in 6 years. I've had shoulder-issues in the past and first time just got picked up by the ambulance, second time i just called the emergency room as i already knew the GP would be unable to fix it. I was right. Took the hospital 4 hours to pop my shoulder back in. (might seem irrelevant, but i've had arguments with GP in the past as he flatout refused to believe i might actually have what i claimed to have).

I really need to see the dentist, but for me the prospect of going there is worse than actually sitting down in that chair.
A root canal doesn't bother me (except for the fact that I've had too many for my age). Pulling wisdom teeth was a mere inconvenience.

But the act of going there.... damn.

Yes, I'm maybe not afraid for the person but I'm very reluctant to see both. I have a fear of needles and in Holland all dentists use them to locally sedate. The thought alone give me the shivers. A upcoming appointment will keep me awake for nights on end almost.

Local authorities/town hall here call me a 'care avoider'. They are real s*ckers for name tagging and labeling. But I'm someone who looks everything up in books and on the net to seek for a solution for a problem myself. Most doctors (not all of course), in my opinion, give meds for the effects or symptoms, where I strongly believe in searching for the cause of the problem and taken that away. I'm a bit of a believer in 'fytotherapy' and I believe strongly in 'good' food and minimize the intake of 'bad' stuff.

woohoo! I'm not alone, I think I might be afraid of the cost and that there might actually be a real problem =\ but i'm 24,i have no insurance and nothing is severely wrong with me except for the cavities. So I guess avoiding them will be yanno, my only answer :P

I still have to be sedated to go to the dentist.
I've been kicked out of two offices becasue I freaked out so badly I started getting really weird and mean - and that was just for cleaning.
I finally found a dentist that does IV sedation, so I'll get "real work" done every couple of years, he gives free N2O for cleanings, I take advantage of that.

what problems have got with doctor and dentist appointments?
as a fellow anti doctor and dentist WPer,might have a few ideas to help, but depends on what it is.

things am find helps,with GPs-
-home visits [as always meltdown in the very overloading health centre,if cant get a home visit, they let am stay in an empty doctors office instead].
-a very understanding doctor, not specialised in autism, but that doesnt matter as he knows so much about it anyway,he doesnt believe in the old stereotypes either [like severe autism=only if have severe MR as well],its great having him as a GP,because he has an understanding of autism, and because he cares,so many GPs dont.

dentists-
-she is a dentist that only works for disabled people, and has a lot of understanding and patience for different needs and disabilities.
-she gives am general anaesthetic for any work that needs doing.
-she has never tried to force anything.

Erminea,
have ever tried diazepam, some needle hating people here get prescribed it to take at a dentist appointment so they are better able to cope with the needle for sedating or the mouth needles.

Thank you for the advice but.... sorry, I'm even more reluctant to take (heavy) medication. Again fytotherapy does the trick (a bit). I mean early this year I went to a jaw surgeon to take out two annoyed/bad teeth in the back of my jaw and I took two little Valerian pills (pure natural) and they made me a bit more calm, not that stressed out, where I totally freaked out before. Still is a very scary business and I was quite proud I did it. It was needed.

Good luck for those who have to go there soon....

nah...I'm not afraid of the doctor. I don't go to my dentist as often as I should, but I'm not afraid of going to that either. I don't see it as a big deal...

Nope. I take care of my teeth every night before I go to bed. And even though I wasn't having any trouble with my teeth, I decided to visit the dentist for a check-up, since I hadn't been to one for in several years.

Brush, floss, brush again, flouride rinse.

Toothpaste: Tom's of Maine
Toothbrush: OralB Advantage with extra-soft bristles.
Floss: OralB Essential.
Flouride rinse: Act.
