What's so bad about fruitcakes?

This is something I've been wondering about lately: Why does everybody think that fruitcakes are disgusting? I mean, it's a cake with fruit in it. People like cake and people like fruit. I don't see how that could possibly be a losing combination... Personally, I'd love to try one.

I know!! I've thought the same thing! I've never had one. I asked my grandma about them, she said they were gross. But if they are so disgusting, why do people keep get them as gifts?

I like Christmas fruitcake!

I just takes so much coffee to wash one down that I'm awake until New Year's...

I like them too, my mom would make them with Guinness in it.

On TV, it doesn't seem like "ooh, gross" as much as it seems like they just get so many that they get sick of them...I get that with a lot of foods.

I heard you're supposed to send them to people you don't like... Why that is, I have no idea.

I love fruit cake, a nice rich fruit cake is better than a sponge or chocolate cake.

I am totally addicted to fruitcake. I even make and eat it at other times of the year!!

Send them all to me. Expecially the oens with almond icing!!

My opinion on the subject is that many people talked themselves into disliking fruit cake because they heard other people talk about not liking it
and disliking it seemed like an easy way to fit in.

How did the whole hatred of fruit cakes thing start?

I suspect it had to do with the alcohol fruit cakes are traditionally saturated with
and how it was considered vulgar and unChristian to imbibe in alcohol in the past. People couldn't admit they enjoyed fruit cakes because to like it might be interpreted to mean that they liked alcohol.

people like fruit, people like cake, and when the two mix It becomes disgusting. That may be why people dont like it, personally I dont like cake.

It's a really, really dense cake with dried fruit and nuts in it.

The only reason I don't like it is because the fruit/nuts are mixed into the cake.

Well, these days, normally its not nuts and just dried fruit.
Its nuts, some dried fruit (like raisins), and candied fruit.

Candied fruit is fruit that's been processed in some sort of sweet syrup.

If a person wanted to make their own fruit cake they could buy candied fruit to put in it
or candy the fruit themselves. Its not a difficult job, just tedious.
