I don't mind reading stories online people write but just as long as they are my interest. Same as books.

In fact I think I will go read a story right now on a website.

I prefer reading books, since they're a lot easier on the eyes...but stories on the Internet always seem to just be there.

I find that I need to make quite an effort when it comes to reading fiction, so I'd much rather be sitting on my bed with a book than staring at a screen.

But when it comes to news, for instance, I get more of that from the net.

I thought the Internet made books obsolete? At least, non-fiction/reference books. Maybe not fiction.

I don't agree with this. I'm still far more likely to find a book I want legally in a library than illegally on the internet. And speaking as a maths student, though resources like Wikipedia serve as a good beginner's guide for a lot of things, they generally do not have nearly enough information for what I want compared with my lecture notes and the books I can get.

As far as fiction goes, most writing I've found on the internet is on an amateur sort of level. I appreciated reading this as an amateur writer myself, but after a few years I felt like I was now comfortable writing with my own style and I subsequently lost interest in internet writing circles as a result.

I rather reading from books. The Internet hurts my eyes after a while and I loose concentration. I also like the feel of paper.

I've only used the Internet to read stories/novels etc twice and that was only because I could not have possibly found them here.

Studies repeatedly show that our reading comprehension is much poorer with text on computer screen versus print materials. This doesn't mean I completely avoid reading on the internet, as it gives me access to information that may not be immediately available to me. But any chance I get, I will always choose print over the computer.

This is why libraries still have a place.

1. So that's why none of my emails make sense.

2. Libraries? Printers....

Actually, I've found recently that I'm reading a lot less and listening to talking books and dramatizations via blackberry more frequently. Books are becoming a little obselete for me.

I prefer books for lengthy reading and internet for intermittent reading, ie news and WP posting.

Interesting, and consistent with my experience (my reading comprehension when reading on a computer screen drops to what can only be described as "canine"). Why is this the case though?

Reading is reading. Doesn't matter where you take in the text. Just screens have advantages and disadvantages like the book

I don't like reading scanned text on a computer typically, due to the font being so small. It just doesn't translate all that well in that format. However, in reading blogs, stories, and forums it doesn't bother me. I just like to read a lot.

Different intensities of light. With print you are viewing reflected light while with the computer you are viewing a direct light source.

I agree. I have difficulty concentrating while reading long pieces of writing on the computer.
