Yeah, the family dynamics do seem pretty messed up in certain ways - I agree with you, Ticker. Glad you brought up the under-feeding and lack of toys. I had noticed those things too but forgotten.
All I can really say is that some of their parenting practices don't strike me as acceptable by normal standards, but how can having 8 young children be considered normal? So maybe it's unfair to hold them to normal standards, especially considering that only select moments from their lives are picked for the show. We don't know how TLC chooses to portray them or how they are in reality.
But, whomever is to blame, some aspects of the show set a bad example for parenting. They also show some good examples - the activities they do, the way the kids are held to certain standards of responsibility, etc.
And of course the show serves as a sort of reality check for people considering starting large families.
I actually started watching those TLC and Discovery Health shows to help me make a more informed decision about whether or not I wanted kids. Cumulatively, shows like that made me doubt that I wanted children, or at least a large number of children . . .
