I'm going to have to buy a mower soon and I've never mowed a lawn in my life. My last two places I paid someone to do it, but I think i'll have to do this one myself.

So, I've got poor arm strength and weak hands with really bad wrists and there's a lot of slope here.

What do people recommend, self propelled (expensive), lightweight push, or the old fashioned barrell push ones?

That is a hilarious thread title Postperson. I am a couple of years younger than you and people in our age range should try to stay in shape, therefore I recommend the old school barrel push type to get yourself in shape. If not that then perhaps the light weight push type.

Go with the self-propelled. It's a little heavier than the rest, but the propulsion system will be well worth the trade-off.

I have a good push mower, no motor on it, and can do the yard in an hour, its great exersize

Yeah but i'm a 51 year old woman. I lean toward self propelled, but I bought a cheap barrel one today at Kmart - it was $49 so it's not that much to lose if you don't like it, it's such a simple machine too, even I understand it and could sharpen it.

Self propelled are mostly well over $1000 here, but may be well worth the expenditure as paying someone to mow adds up to $300 -$400 a year.

I'm on a small acreage (mostly slope, it's the side of a hill) and there's 4 or 5 areas to mow which vary a lot. The small front and back lawns are level, then there's a very large grassed slope to the west, then there's a largish slope/level raised bank behind the house. There's also an uneven sloping bank to the north. The old lady that used to live her was super fit, one of those people who need to tire themselves out physically and she did it with a push mower (the husband did no physical work, had a paying job), but I'm nowhere near as strong or energetic as her.

Wow, $1000 for a self-propelled? Around here you could pick a new one up for less than $500. Maybe you can find a used one somewhere?

yeah that's AUD, so probably with exchange rates...

I think i'll look for a second hand one.

I've got to assemble the 'reel' mower today, they come in a box, so that might be some use for a while or in non-growing periods when you just need to tidy up.

I mow the lawns on my properties, and it really kicks my old kester. I highly recommend looking for a used self propelled Honda lawn mower. They use regular gas, and are quieter than most mowers. Than again, you may consider paying the neighbor kid $5.00 a pop to mow it for you.
