The strangest thing happened to me this week. I came out of the bank, and was walking to my car, when this guy in this dark van stopped next to me, leaned out the window, gave me the creepiest smile, and exuding with confidence said, :D "Hey! How would you like a free stereo system? [maybe he said home-entertainment system] An order got canceled and I don't know anyone in town."
I apathetically replied, "No. Not interested." and got in my car.

Now, I have no need for a home entertainment system or speaker system, but that's beside the point. Does anything about that sound suspicious to you? :? What he said makes no sense to me. Since when does a delivery company give away new merchandise from canceled orders? Does this stuff happen?
Conversely, I can see no ulterior motive for any scam he could've been running. Did he want to lure me closer to SELL me a system? Something seemed not right, but I can't put my finger on it.
I try to not be gullible, but am I just being a paranoid fool?

You were not being paranoid. That guy's behavior was definitely suspicious.

Perhaps he was just trying to get you close enough that he could rob you. Perhaps the stereo was hot and he was trying to get rid of it in a hurry because the cops were hot on his trail.

Who knows? At any rate, nobody just gives away a stereo to a random stranger in a parking lot.
