The Poinsettia plant, the famous red leaved Christmas plant, is not poisonous. In the 1940's a Doctor erroneously attributed a patient's illness to ingestion of the plant, and the news spread quickly. Some time later, tests were done on the plant and it was found to be completely harmless, but rumors still persist that it is not, all based on one doctor's report.
All members of the Euphorbia family have toxic sap to some degree. Some are worse than others, the milk bush probably being the worst. The poinsettia, E. Pulcherissima, is mildly toxic but not poisonous. Eating it will probably make you feel a little ill and maybe some tingling and swelling of the throat, not much more.

Tomatoes were once thought to be poisonous.
True, the story of the nightshade family is an interesting one. Various cultures have either revered or despised different species of the family. Close relatives of the tomato include: Eggplants, potatos, tomatillos, sweet. and hot peppers. Belladonna (deadly nightshade) is the famous poisonous one- actually most species from this family contain toxic alkaloids... the ones we eat are almost free; still, some people have a reaction to them and can't eat them.
And random fact from brain:
Cows can produce on average 4 quarts of methane a day.... now there is an alternative fuel source.
