I got a venus flytrap

The past several years, I've bought venus flytraps and they've all inexplicably died - withered black and died.

Today I bought one and repotted it in sphagnum and peat, covered the container in saran wrap and put it under a warming light to keep the warmth and moisture circulating.

Anyone here good with carnivorous plants and such?

had that problem with a venus fly trap to,but that was because no one remembered to water it [as they need rain water,not tap water-thats what the guy at the vicarage garden centre said anyway].

if have not been given any information by the seller,have got one thing to say,dont keep getting the leaves to close on purpose,as it weakens them and they die.
one thing had noticed when had put own one in lounge,was the amount of people who were desperate to see them close,so making sure others dont keep doing it is good to.

catch flies and feed it - they like flies!

I've got several venus fly traps. They need full sun and to be kept in a pot without a drainage hole in the bottom and the compost kept soaked in Summer and just wet in Winter. As mentioned you must not use tap water as they hate any lime / calcium in the water. I use rainwater only. Never feed them with fertiliser. They are a bog plant used to living in water with poor nutrients, hence they catch insects for more nutrients. Avoid the temptation to feed them with bits of hamburger! If you are lucky the plants will put up flower spikes once a year and grow bigger. I've split my original into seven plants now.

I've also got a pitcher plant - it looks like a triffid and quite menacing. The pitchers are nearly two feet high now... our little dog is getting nervous walking past it.

I don't have enough bugs in my apartment to keep one of these alive, fortunately. It's also way too dry in my area.

What happened to Hannibal?

I could name my Cylon Hannibal.

Maybe it needed more insects. Make sure you leave the door open and let the flies in. Did the last one you had die during wintertime? If it died during wintertime could be because there weren't any flies.
