Irrationalities
I have seen it said that we with ASDs are people of logic. Of course, we do seem to tend to be so. However, I doubt there is anyone here who is entirely rational. With this is mind, in what ways are you irrational?
Here is an irrationality of mine:
I cannot stand to be in a room which has both the curtains opened and the light turned on. It seems so wrong - so perverse - to me that it is unbearable. If I accidentally enter a room like this, I actually scream before running outside. If it is dark and the curtains are open, I will cross the room to close the curtains first before blindly returning to the door to turn the light on.
The most unreasonable part of all, though, is that I am able to dislike a person if they are in the habit of keeping a lit room with open curtains. One of my flatmates is like this. This afternoon - at only 13:00 and with the afternoon sun coming through the window - he had the light on. I try not to associate with him because of this habit, despite knowing it is not a fair way to judge someone's character.
So, I ask, in what ways are you irrational?
I'm the opposite.
I got have too much light unless the window provides enough to see.
I'd say the only irritable light I can't stand is neon lights which give me overwhelming headaches.
Another irrationality I have is the phobia that people are ignoring me intentionally. I think it goes way back into childhood. I had trouble speaking and could never find the right words for objects and complex thoughts so I made my own words up. Most people assumed I was very shy, a mute, or a ret*d. Not a "happy" childhood in that most kids were out playing with eachother while I was by myself making my own doll houses and drawings...lala land.
Maybe I am somewhat more irrational....? I don't know. But I do find it hillarious in how people waste their money on material and food like it was nothing. Especially people who use their silly cards as if that wasn't going to make the cost of everything going up. I am a miser when it comes to money...same as my dad. I don't use heat or air condition because it's too costly. So I use cheaper crap like fans, cool boxes, and electric heat.

I'm the same way about lights on when sunlight is coming through the window. However, that's not irrational at all. If there's enough light to read by (and there always is during the day if there are windows, except during a solar eclipse), then it's a waste of energy to have an overhead light on. My stepfather is in the habit of having the overhead light on, no matter how much light is coming through the windows - no matter what he's doing. Often he turns on the lights to walk through a room, so that he can reach the door to go outside (leaving the lights on). Maybe my feeling of insanity about this is irrational.
I think I had undiagnosed OCD when I was a child. That was me being sohhh rational that it was irrational. Everything about me is rational now though, although I can tolerate irrationality from other people, as long as it doesn't cost me money for them to be such. Emitting smoke into my personal space will get my full hatred.

Yeah that's another one I have trouble with.
I can't stand smoke I don't like the smell of it on my clothes and it makes me have allergies. It gets a bit tiresome to hear people tell me how anal I am about that even though I do try and not let it get to me.
I had one really rude lady who puffed in face after I was having an allergy attack. I guess she thought I was "intentionally" insulting her. I know with all no smoke places, people have been getting pissed about and blame it on people like me.

Ok...doesn`t take much to make people hate these days, does it..
Personally, I`m sick of being chased around and outside like a dog
everywhere - soon the rules are so tight that i have to hide under
a blankett in my home with cops outside screaming "come out of
the house, we know you have the sigarets, come out of the house
with the sigarets above your head!" Jeeez..
If i want to smoke,
the i`m gonna f-ing smoke, my choice and good luck with stopping
me. The way i see it, if a person cant even handle a little smoke
in the air, then that person have a big, big problem.
edit---
i dont mean i`ll go into a crowded restuarant and insist on smoking,
but when people start to hate smokers and one shouldn`t even be
allowed to smoke outside or in my own home, i kinda feel like telling
to f**k off. I cant stand the stench of burnt flesh, but most people
are meat eaters and they walk around stinking like that. Do i complain?
No. I deal with it and let them stink.

I think my ability to dislike people who leave the light on in an uncurtained room is irrational.
I put that option in as a joke. I'm honestly surprised there are people who have voted for it.

logic is my God.
but I also have some irrational behaviours at times. if I see a pattern of unfortunate events I feel inclined to avoid it even if it's totally irrational. example: when I was unemployed, I had numerous job interviews and they all went bad if I told someone about them beforehand. so I started to avoid talking about my interviews to people, to the extent that I actually lied about it, because I was afraid that the pattern was going to persist (
)
but eventually I convinced myself that it was irrational, superstitious thinking that I normally despise in people, and I actually told everyone I knew about the job interview that later landed me my current job (I was very scared though, and thought that I blew it by telling others, up until I got the positive feedback
).
I am very ashamed about my occasional irrationality...

I am also pure logic. A lot of what you guys describe as annoying can be logically explained.
Bright, uneven light bugs the crap out of me - but its because my eyes are so sensitive. Pretty logical. So, I logically adjust the light or wear sunglasses and move on.
Even when I'm having a freakout - I know its because my seratonin levels are screwed up - so I logically take xanax or better yet, take a walk outside and soak up some sunshine.
I guess for me, thinking logically and acting irrationally can be logically explained.

Of course these things aren't completely illogical, but have reasons for them and can be explained. I think the idea of someone having psychic powers is an irrational one, but I can imagine that if I was missing some information I had and had some information I lack, I might come to the conclusion, based on a logical evaluation of the information I have, that psychic powers exist. I think belief in psychic powers is illogical, but I know that logic was used to come to the belief, just - as far as I can tell - sucky logic.
This thread was inspired by certain people saying such as: "I thought aspies were logical, why don't you believe what I believe? Anyone who disagrees with me must surely be irrational."
Anyway, here is another 'irrationality' of mine: I wait at pedestrian crossings until the green man signal to cross appears, even if there are no cars coming and I could quite easily cross safely. I get annoyed at people who cross when it isn't their 'turn'.

lol I get annoyed at people like you, don't know why :p
I always cross when there are no cars on the way, no matter the lights. if I'm in a company of a person who will insist on waiting I get irritated.

I take a pleasure in walking really fast and catching up with, and then overtaking, those people who cross when it isn't their turn.
If I'm with someone who crosses the road at a red man, I give in and cross with them though.

Seconded, I consider lights to be there to ease the flow between pedestrians and traffic, not a switch for behaviour.

Hmmmm... again, being respectful of the law is perfectly logical. It depends on where I am. If I'm in a big city - I'll wait for the white man - if there's a chance I'll get caught. (He's white in most US cities - not a racial thing)
So, you're right. Adhering to your own sense of logic seems logical to but may not be for others.
Here's one: I am very respectful of currency and could never throw away a penny even though its not worth anything. The fact that its Federal property and its technically illegal to destroy currency prevents me from vaccuuming a penny and tossing in the trash. I guess that's not very logical.
