According to the hazegray website Finland and Sweden have the larger Navies. Norway and Denmark have rather small Navies. I am shocked Norway has a small Navy....I looked up the Baltic States, it looks like there Navies are only ceremonial.

The Swedish, Norwegian, and Danish Navies include the Royal Ships.

Well, I guess Norway and Denmark didn't have as dire need to keep up the navy as Finland and Sweden did during the Cold War. But it's a very uneducted guess.

If you really want to see Finland kick #$%, look for a movie short called 'Star Wreck'; about 400 megabytes, but a really good parody of both Star Trek and Babylon 5... Finnish with English subtitles...

i find it strange that norway should have a _much_ smaller navy than sweden, considering the length of coast that needs protection, especially since the coast continues past norway, and up into the north pole, and the svalbard islands.
sweden did a lot of building up for a potential cold war total war scenario, see sweden's burrowing tanks and stuff

it could be a question of modernization/economy etc. i dunno.
(yes, economy norway's rich, but thats only cus we have almost no population. the actual ammount of money isnt all that much...)

norway DID build the worlds first and fastest stealth ship
then sweden copied the design, and made it bigger and better (but not faster! hah! ours is faster! )

Are you Vikng guys familiar with the Author Bruce Bawer? He wrote the book 'While Europe Slept", he is an American expatriate living in Norway. He is very critical of the Norwegian governments liberal immigration policy. I am kind of a fan of his but I am shocked that he is so critical of the Norwegian government when he is a guest in the country.

I leave for Brussels in a few hours, I am going to my cousins wedding in the Netherlands (Brabant Province).

The norwegian army is designed to last for 24 hours should an invasion happen. The norwegian elite forces though, "telemarksbataljonen", the people we send to war ridden countries with the peace forces, have one of the toughest and most indepth military training in the entire world.

what exactly do you mean "designed to last for 24 hours" this sounds rather sensational.

we got 20 000 standing soldiers, almost 60 000 home defense troops, are you suggesting we're meant to instantly lose 80 000 soldiers? for all out war, we're able to pull out over 200 000 fighting men.
you need a helluva battle to kill them all in 24 hours :I

i know our army is rather small, but its on par w most of europe, if compared to population size. our hardware most definitaly lasts longer than 24 hours, and remember when the germans attacked, we only had wooden hunting rifles, half our army went to bed early, and still we held out 2-3 months of conventional resistance.

24 hours sounds... VERY extreme, maybe if we're attacked by aliens or something, but i would give our armed forces AT LEAST a week of survival, even if attacked by usa, russia or even china.
look at afghanistan still pounting out hurt, and they dont even have an army anymore.
never underestimate people's will to kill ;]

In reply to that, ZEGH8578, I'll only say that the age of ground to ground battle has passed. 24 hours is enough time to get reinforcements from our allies.

(and sorry for my constant edits. im a perfectionist when it comes to the content of my every post. im sure im the only one around here )

and as i said - without nato i'll give us a week, to a couple of months maximum, against a powerfull nation, before we have to wave the white flag.
i just reacted to what i percieved as very quick assumptions about military strength, that i see a lot.
especially when people talk about usa, and the total invulnerability of american forces
ive often heard people at stonerparties assume that an american attack on norway would be over in a matter of minutes.
im always the guy who goes "hey... give us at LEAST a week or two, man! where's your minimum of national pride?"

It's not just my opinion, ZEGH8578. Our army is in actuality designed to last for 24 hours. That doesn't mean 220 000 soldiers are going to die, but it means that is the minimum amount of time (pessimistic view) we can keep enemies from taking control over the authorities.
