Padde means toad. I'm not sure what 'skil' derives from, i'm guessing it means shield, shell or scales. In Dutch turtle is Schildpad, and toad is pad. In German turtles is Schildkröten, kröten means toads (not sure what the singular word is). So in all Scandinavian languages and Dutch and German, the word for turtle ends with toad. I have yet to learn the exact meaning of skil or why all these languages connect turtles and toads.
