Thanks everyone, sincerely.

I would feel lost without this place and I am so glad I found out about it. I am the only one in my family here on the spectrum and it's not always easy to convey how I feel with them.

Thank you all for being so understanding.

I;m the only one in my family on the spetrum I envy you though I wish could give birth to a child but I cant cause I was born a guy.

If your kid inherits your autism, you'll have the perspective of have autism yourself,f and pass on the coping mechanisms and skills that you had to acquire yourself over the years.

That's all I have to say, because I'm not a parent. Congrats!

But, will they have the challenges that I face? Will they struggle as I have? How do I help?

Hey there, my first thought is that everyone has challenges in life - if it's not one thing, it's another. So you can pretty much go into parenthood expecting challenges no matter what. If your child happens to have autism, at least you'll be able to relate and likely see into their world in a way that NT parents may have trouble with. You have many months to educate yourself on all of the possibilities and how/when you can take action. Some parents actually find out that they themselves have autism when it is discovered in their child, which is kind of what happened to my husband and I. We found out that we're on the spectrum at the same time that we started suspecting it in our son. So, you're kind of ahead of the game in that sense.

There's no way to know if your child will be "like you" or not until he/she is old enough to show signs. I have two boys, ages 4 and 1. Neither seem to be on the spectrum, so far, but my oldest son is showing some signs of ADHD, which also runs in my family. The good thing is that you know to be aware and, if your child is on the spectrum, you can get help for him/her early. I was not diagnosed until adulthood and I've had problems all my life that I got no help for. My sons won't have this problem and neither will your child. I myself wonder sometimes if I'm not a very good mother because of my Asperger's, but I'm doing the best I can, and you will too, whether your child is NT or not. Good luck to you.

Congratulations! How are you doing, JazzyM? You'll probably do just fine - kids are resilient.

I have three children and one is on the spectrum. We're pretty sure the other two are not.

I can really relate to what OliveOilMom said about not being especially attatched to the unborn child. If you read all those the baby magazines (I do not think it is a good idea to do so) they will tell storys about the happy pregnancy (and maybe about after birth depression). I certanily love my children (four boys), more than anybody else but I did not have strong feelings for them when I was pregnant. It took me a while to develop those feelings. When they were just born I found them cute etc. but the strong feelings came later. That is just the way I am, and that is ok, today I would probably sacrifice more for my children than many other people would do :)

By the way (I do really not hope this happens for you) I develop a depression as soon as I get pregnant, it is some sort of hormone induced depression. It can happen but it is not normal.

I think my two oldest boys are on or near the spectrum, but in the lighter end (like me). I do not know with the twins yet, they are only 2 years old.

Good luck

Congratulations on the pregnancy! That's great! :) I personally want kids, like, I have this insane idea that I want 23 kids. I love kids that much, lol.

Anyway, about your hopes that they won't be like you... First thing I thought when I read that was "I hope when I have kids they ARE like me!" Cause ya know, I don't drink, or do drugs, or sneak out, or anything. Besides my challenges, I'm the perfect kid! LOL.

But unfortunately I shouldn't probably have my own children because I would have to be on my meds while I was pregnant and they might mutate the fetus :(
