 I've gotten a lot of jokes over the years about how my wardobe makes it seem like I'm trying to blend into the wall (congratulations, people, you've figured it out! ;) ). My husband started shopping for me when we were dating. And, after we got married, he told me 'no more khaki'. So, I do wear nicer slacks and more colorful blouses now, but, the comments and compliments were weird when I first started doing it.

You're not alone, I absolutely love wearing make up (it used to be an important routine for me) and taking care of myself physically :)

I also love corsets, high heels, stockings, pencil skirts and dresses... I probably look pretty made up even on an ordinary day or so I'm told :P

I also have long blonde hair and slender, but curvaceous physique so I do feel sometimes that I'm not expected to have similar insecurities that more "typical" aspies do even in an autism community (though I certainly do). We're all different, I'm really happy to read a lot of the replies here :)

I tend to live in corduroy trousers and polo shirts/hoodies, and hiking/cargo trousers in the summer. I don't mind wearing shorts or skirts in the summer. I'm not the most feminine of people but I love love LOVE pretty dresses! I have several absolutely gorgeous ones but there's one that doesn't fit me - it's a size 8 (UK size) and they used to fit nicely, but since becoming a wheelchair user and taking up wheelchair badminton, I've gone up to a size 12 (I can juuuuuuuuuust about fit into a 10 but it's very very snug and too constricting for an active wheelchair user like myself) and I've had to go up from a 34 to a 36 in bras, purely due to the muscles I've put on from the sport!

If I wear skirts and dresses I have a tendency to wear tights with them because I really really hate the feel of my legs sticking against each other (same reason I can't cope with nightdresses; I have to wear pyjamas).

I do have "girly" moments and I love dressing up and making myself pretty, but I'm usually fairly tomboyish, always have been.

Make-up, though, I very, very rarely wear - partly because it's such a faff, waste of energy (limited anyway because of fibromyalgia and ME/CFS) and just annoys me on the whole. I can't stand nail varnish because it makes my nails feel like they're suffocating. I'm actually getting that sensation just thinking about it!

Yay! So many replies! I have read that women with asperger's don't care much for makeup...so I wonder what makes those of us who do different? I find it helps prepare me mentally for interacting with people, but that's just me I suppose.

I think of myself as feminine but I don't wear heels (I'll fall down) or much makeup. My teen DD with AS is more androgynous than I am.

I go through phases of paying a lot of attention to my physical appearance and phases where I don't think about it at all (and therefore don't wear makeup and generally look like a slob). It basically depends on whether there is something to make me self-conscious or I have other things weighing more heavily on my mind. Am I the only one like that?

I went through something similar. I did the whole hyperfemme thing as a teen, mostly as a way of fitting in. I was extremely successful at it. It never made me feel more (or less) feminine. Got over it.

Mine too! What jerks to comment on that. Policing the perceived amount when at the same time probably expecting daily make-up use. And I've gotten accusations(!) of plastic surgery (from strangers, so there wasn't some epic before-after make-up transformation happening).

Also equating make-up to "taking care of yourself", "not looking like a slob" etc: make-up is not hygiene! There are many ways to pay attention to your exterior (if that's your thing) that doesn't involve applying make-up.

I try to make sure I'm clean and neat when I go out now. My skin is happier since I stopped wearing makeup, and when I stopped wearing perfume I realized how very much people wear. When you're wearing it you don't smell it, you build up a tolerance to it. Stop wearing it and you really notice it on others! I don't want to impose on people that way, most of the time.

My husband has always thought I looked better without makeup, from day one. He used to see me putting it on before work and call it my war paint. :D

I love high heels too, but I always feel so self concious wearing them! I'm wearing some tomorrow night for NYE but I'm concerned about getting around in the 2 feet of snow! I never would wear them on just a regular day.

I do not wear makeup at all. I'm pretty tomboyish. I dress up when I absolutely have to. I'm not really feminine in the least.
