Yeah, I pretty much figured THAT'S Mirena's main mode of pregnancy prevention; no sex drive what so ever.. :-P

blueroses, have you looked into copper IUD's? As I mentioned I could have wanted to try one of those, but I'm very unsure because I hear about a lot of women who reacts badly to those too..

I absolutely love my mirena iud :) I got my first one in my late 20's and insertion hurt like a b***h!! ! ( no kids) Totally worth it though. I'd heard too many horror stories about worsening cramps with the copper (and mine were debilitating to begin with), to try that one. Lol, now I have no period, no cramps, no babies and no sex drive (I can blame that last mostly on the effexor though.) I will warn you... having my first one removed was pretty damn painful as well; almost as bad as the initial insertion (doc was pretty surprised by that though). I'm halfway through my 5 years on my 2nd one and I plan to get a 3rd when it expires.

I have a copper IUD for the last 4 years and am really happy with it. I can't do hormonal birth control of any sort because it screws with my moods and gives me constant spotting. I had given birth vaginally, and the insertion didn't bother me at all, but I have a fairly high pain tolerance so I'm not sure if that's why. Also it's great not having to remember to take/change anything because I am paranoid about an unplanned pregnancy but I'm super forgetful!

I've had a Mirena almost two years.
I like the lack of periods because I used to get anaemic and exhausted due to very heavy periods, with cramps.
But I'm seriously considering having it removed as I've been suffering anxiety and depression more and more. It appears it can affect some people, and the longer I'm on it the worse I feel.

That is exactly why I decided to remove mine, depression and anxiety that just got gradually worse the longer I had the Mirena. + of course massive weight gain and no sex drive.

I didn't notice anything the first few months, but the hormones takes some time to build up and when they do the symptoms will too.

Now that I've had mine out for a little over a year I can clearly see how my mood issues correlated with the Mirena, it started about 3-4 months after I got it, gradually worsened until I removed it after almost a year, then things gradually got better for the next 4+ months again. It felt like it took longer to get the hormones out of my system than for them to build up in the first place.

I've had a Mirena for nearly two years now. I had it inserted because I was having very heavy periods and also bleeding in between periods, with bad cramps, and I had thickened lining of the womb.
The Mirena was inserted right after I had a curettage (to remove the thickened lining and test it for cancer - all was well). because of this combined procedure the first two weeks after were not good - I was bleeding constantly and had bad cramps, but I was warned that might happen.

After that things improved quickly, and three months after the mirena was inserted my periods had diminished to a few droplets every month, and I have virtually no more cramps. I have no side effects. I have gained a little bit of weight but that might just be because I am now so much happier that I enjoy nice food even more!

I love the mirena. It greatly improved my life. No more days of debilitating cramps, rivers of blood with clots etc, no more anemia, and no more worries about arranging things (like swimming, long-distance travel) around periods!

My only regret is that I waited so long to have it inserted; the doctor had been advising it to me for three years before I decided to have it done.

In the past I have suffered from very severe depression and anxiety. I am 44 now. My last big depression was when I was 35. Since then I have still had some anxiety, and still occasional short mild depressive episodes, but I have not been very depressed for prolonged periods of time, and this didn't change at all after I've had the mirena inserted. In fact, my bad PMS moods have become shorter.

Bumping this thread because I would like to hear IUD experiences as well. Particularly from women who haven't had children. I am also concerned about the likelihood of ovarian cysts because of family history.

I had the Mirena out a month ago. I found my depression and anxiety began to slowly lift. I feel a bit more motivated too. Early days as yet.

Waiting to see how well my moods balance and when my cycles return to normal.
Have had RSI-type pains for the first time in years.

I had a Mirena for 4 years between my kids (4.5 yrs old and 5 weeks old). LOVED not having periods. (Well, I would get a day of light spotting every few months or so, but it barely counted.) Getting it removed was nearly painless, much better than having it put in, which made me cry and was pretty bad. It just slipped right out and my doc said, "There you go! You're fertile walking out the door!" I was pregnant a month and a half later, LOL

Now that the 2nd baby is born, I'm probably going to opt for a Paragard (copper) IUD since they last 10 years instead of just 5 and I'm 95% sure we're done having kids. Effective and long-term, but not permanent in case we change our minds. Awesome.

I hated the Paragard, which I originally chose over the Mirena because I was breastfeeding (the hormones can interfere with milk production). I had extremely heavy periods on it: I bled about 18 ounces each day (measured by my DivaCup [definitely recommend those!]), for about 2.5 weeks at a time. No joke, and no exaggeration! It was thoroughly miserable. I had it removed after three years of that (I weaned my son at 3), and replaced it with the Mirena. Infinitely better. Now I bleed maybe 2 ounces total over about 8 days.

Of course, this is just the experience of one person; you should read up as much as you can so that you can make an informed decision based on personal needs without being swayed too heavily by testimonies. ;)

I had one in for five years (the same brand as you're using) then had it taken out when it expired, about a month ago. When I first had it put in there was a lot of discomfort, but that faded and after that I had no problems with it. I had minimal periods, just spotting now and then that hardly even called for pads/tampons most of the time, and it was effective as a method of birth control since I was quite active and never got pregnant. Now that it is out I still have had not had any problems.

I guess in that case I should mention that I've never been pregnant. I have not gotten checked for cysts. I plan to go get a check up soon but haven't gotten around to it yet. Just a general feminine health check up, not specifically to check for cysts.

I opted for an old fashioned copper IUD. Periods are a bit heavier but I did not want to risk the side effects of hormones being messed with. IUD would be no use if I turn into a raving phycho like I did on the pill. I found it great not having to think about it now its in place.

Five months since I had the Mirena removed.
I no longer wake up feeling horribly anxious, I don't feel "blank" emotionally.
The depression has begun to lift and I have more motivation to go do things and enjoy things I'd stopped enjoying.
The change has been gradual but noticeable.
My periods have returned very heavy but I don't want to go back to the Mirena.

Thanks. I actually got a cyst a couple months after I wrote that. I decided to try Nuvaring after that. I wanted to test my reaction to hormones w/ something more removable. I'm not sure that it's going so well.

I seriously just want to get sterilized at this point, but my gyno is afraid because of my age. She *really* wants me to at least go through the lifespan of an IUD first so I will have time to change my mind.

I once had someone trying to convince me that if I got married and decided I didn't want kids (which won't happen), I could get one put in. I don't think so; I'm not too keen on the idea of something being in there, it bothers the hell out of me, the entire concept does. I'm quirming just imagining it...Kudos to you for being able to stand the idea and go through with it; you're far braver than I am, lol.

I got a Mirena too. I am too flaky to remember a pill at the same time daily (got pregnant that way) and I cant afford the $60 or so a month for the patch or the ring. My Mirena cost me a $20 copay, thats it. I have not had a kid so it was very, very painful going in. It was much like the pain of having an abortion but over with much faster. I was back on my feet in about 30 min.
