STDs are just as easily spread throughout the main stream. People don't realise how common they are.
Doesn't make the person with them any less of a selfish prick either.

Well, the thing is, prostitues you KNOW have been with so many men they're swarming and crawling with disease. Mainstream is a crapshoot but eh, I wouldn't waste my time on a guy that hadn't been TESTED first. Either way.

Even if it was a legal brothel where the women are tested regularly and required to use protection?

Face it, it's smart to get yourself and your partner tested before you start a physical relationship with them... regardless of who they have slept with in the past.

Combined rates of chlamydia and gonorrhoea were just over 10% among straight people, 14% among gay men, just under 5% in female prostitutes, and 10.4% among swingers.

so prostitues had 5% chlamydia which is less than all other groups.

I wonder if the risk of HPV and herpes is higher though, apparently these can be transmitted despite condoms.

But, the main problem I have is the financialising of something I think shoul be between two adults who are enjoying themselves. I think maybe some prostitutes enjoy their job, but most would be in it for the money, and I would be unhappy to know a man I dated had helped sponsor a woman to buy drugs, or sponsor her pimp's car, or help bankroll someone who traffics humans from another country, or sleeps with someone who was abused as a child, and now thinks they are not worth more than dollar bills.

It totally depends on whether I was in a relationship with him or just having sex with him.

In the first case, absolutely not. In the second case, yeah I guess so.

no significant changes in the poll. i have left it open for 30 days, but it seems as though the results are pretty steady. interesting! don't think anybody could have predicted the percentage of Yes or No.

I thought it would be a lot higher in the 'no.'

As did I. But then again, a lot of people were in the middle ground about it. "Yes, but only if..." Either way, it's surprising. :)

This may be a leap, but I'm assuming everyone that said yes had conditions. I know I voted yes and I wouldn't do it without STD testing. Hell, these days I wouldn't start a sexual relationship with anyone without STD testing. Prostitutes in their past or not.

That makes sense. I had similar conditions too. :)

It's roughly 35% yes and 65% no - I find this pretty balanced and it's close to what I expected. Emilion said she thought there will me more votes for "no" - Hyperlexian and Erisad, would you care to say why you find the results surprising and what you would have expected them to be? I find this thread very interesting, too :)
