I only go every couple of months for a wash and a cut, that's all, normally it costs just under $20. I find trying to get my hair done to be a huge pain because I have to walk for about half an hour to this salon but can't make appointments because it's a walk-in salon, and when I go there it's usually very busy and I have to wait and wait, fortunately there are a number of stores I can browse in while I do. But last time I went I discovered they were closed until 2 because they were having a hairdressing class, and then they pushed it to 3, and when it was finally 3 the place was so packed that they told me I'd have to wait another hour and I said never mind because I was sick of walking around and waiting so I went home. I went back and got it cut a couple days later. And my last trip there before the hairdresser cut the back of my hair way too short and even when she used the shaver there were these bristly spots that I couldn't stop touching, and usually they do a good job on my hair, but not this time. And once even before that the hair dressers laughed at me when I mentioned I washed my hair every day. They said that was too much and I could end up ruining it. I wash my hair every other day now even though I don't even want to even shower anymore.
I think next time I'll try to find a new salon, one closer to my apartment where I can make appointments and the hair dressers don't make nasty remarks, like that one place where the dresser was almost done with my hair and said, "You look almost human again!" I was sort of joking about how unruly my own hair can get, but I didn't appreciate it.
I don't know if there is such a place in this town, however... I also hate how the loose hair gets on and under my shirt even with the smock around me and it gets brushed off I have to shower to stop the insane itching, and when I get my hair washed the rim digs into the back of my neck even with padding and it feels like my circulation is being cut off and I worry I'll get a blood clot in my brain, and after it's done I'm somewhat dizzy and disoriented. It's almost as bad when I had to to get an MRI after ear surgery with my head upside down, still recovering from the surgery and overnight stay in the hospital...but I digress.
Going to the hair salon is like twice or three times a year "chore" that I despise.......
I don't mind the shampoo. But I don't like when they give me a massage. I feel opposite of relaxed lol
As others mentioned, I dont really like small talk either but I also sort of understand from their point of view so I try to engage in the conversation as much as I can. Since I have a cartilage piercing, I am horrified of scissors getting anywhere near by because my regular hair dresser always pulls my piercing despite me telling her prior. It's also quite expensive. Since I have long hair I generally spend about $60 per visit. ![]()
The hairdresser I have now is pretty good. She is pretty considerate, and chats about interesting stuff. I have had ones that go on about boring chit chat, spray you with a tonne of hairspray, and lecture you about how "wild" your hair has become. My hair grows really quickly, and if It looked great, there'd be no reason to be there!
Off topic slightly, I once got a brow wax from a young woman, who insisted on chatting the whole time about fashion, shoes and kids. When I told her I had no kids, she spent the rest of the session talking about kids, with the added " but you wouldn't know about that". I haven't gone back. Longest 20 odd minutes of my life. ![]()

I got two cartilage piercings (one in each ear) and three others on each lobe and I always take them out before getting a hair cut. Put them in a little pillbox I have in my purse and put the earrings back in later. Maybe this will help. I don't mind getting my hair done, this thread reminded me that it's been a few months since my last one and time to get it cut again. I just let the hairdressers concentrate on their work rather than chatting to them. I tell them Im not really a chatty type and I think they respect my honesty.

Cat dead, details later.
I don't mind getting my hair done, I just wish I didn't have to deal with the customary chit chat.
I've also met many stylists that don't know how to work with my hair type (baby fine and straight-ish) and it's sometimes a pain getting the hairstyle I want without feeling pushy.

Yes, I hate getting my hair done, but I like looking in the mirror and seeing my hair the color it used to be...lol...not just vanity but a "sameness" comfort thing. My hair is not so grey but a medication seems to have taken the familiar natural red/copper shine out of it. I have to stay on the med. It is hard to describe but the color change upset me, so I needed to fix that...mirrors and photos all looked wrong to me.
I hate the smell and noise of the salon, and I am not fond of being handled and don't like chit chat. Half the time the overwhelm will trigger a mild migraine.
But it is only for a little bit. I get the same gal everytime and she is sharp. I basically tip her a lot extra to cut down on the overwhelm...including not lots of chat, and not taking it personally that I refuse to let her, or anyone else, cut my bangs. Nobody else can get them perfect but me, lol. For years, I wouldn't let anybody cut my hair, but did it myself...until I needed the color fixed.
I was just talking to my hubby about this last night (I think we're both aspies). We both hate getting our hair cut with a passion. He said the same thing, he said "I hate it when she gives up on talking to me and joins in on the conversation next to us"! I totally agree, getting my hair cut is the worst thing ever, and I only get it cut a few times a year, typically when I start looking pretty shabby. I should do it more often though because when I don' t I have to sit through the lady telling me about how damaged my hair is and blah blah blah and I turn 8 different shades of red and want to run out the door.
The only thing worse than that was when my friend bought me a complimentary massage. I thought that it wouldn't be so bad because I assumed that the lady wasn't supposed to talk to me...boy was I wrong about that, she talked my ears off. It wasn't relaxing at all, it was just annoying, and she was annoying! She kept insulting my religion, without bothering to find out what religion I am. Ugh, terrible experience.

Yeah, between the creepiness of having one's hair washed in public by someone else, the need to try to carry on a conversation (while this person's hands are on my head, no less), and having to endure a screaming blowdryer, I find it an incredibly unpleasant experience.
Add to that the facts that it's expensive, especially if your hair is long, and that I'm almost always very displeased with whatever they've done...
...I've pretty much just stopped getting my hair cut. It's been about 4 1/2 years.
...Although...Solvejg, I kind of like your solution.
On a related note, is anyone else annoyed by the "split ends" lecture, from hairdressers or from other people? ("But you have to get your hair cut, you'll get split ends, blahblahblah...") I mean, I'm pretty sure the condition isn't fatal.
I used to have a hairdresser who was really shy, so that was perfect. We didn't chat, but it wasn't awkward, it was actually kind of nice.
Then I moved, and I haven't found another one I like her.
I don't love the actual experience. I have very fine hair that tangles badly. When I was a kid, I'd scream!
i don't like them. i don't like the smells, the sounds, the lighting, the touching, or the chit chat. i've got really long hair so i use to go 1-2 times a year. still hated those times. my sister suggested i cut my own hair. so i take my dress shears to my hair whenever it looks like it needs a trim now. i'm much happier this way. ![]()
6 years ago I bought a pair of hair clippers, and have been cutting and dyeing my own hair ever since. Best purchase ever. Saved 100's of dollars, and no longer have to make awkward small talk while someone touches my head, no more hairdryers (glad I'm not the only person who can't stand the heat/noise), no more recommendations of unnecessary hair products that I would never use.
Now if I could only figure my way out of visits to the dentist I'd be set.

you see, it's not the washing of hair or even the scalp massage (unless they get heavy-handed with it), it's the teeny tiny spraying water droplets that bounce off and lightly spray me in the forehead that I hate. Fortunately, most of the time I come in with freshly washed (and mostly dry) hair and she likes it and will go from there without sending me to the sink.
My hairdresser is pretty much no-frills. She's cut my hair since I walked into the shop and got it chopped from long to short on a whim when I was 16 (12 years ago), and this is her 3rd shop that I've followed her to over the years (she now has her own shop in her home). She knows I'm a bit impaired in the desire to make a ton of smalltalk. Usually most of the smalltalk goes on between her and mom. The only thing that bugs me about her is that she's a smoker, so you do get that lingering smell that follows her around.
Most of my hair's state usually alternates between being completely down with a part in the middle, or up in a tightly wrapped bun if it gets in the way or if I get hot. I do have a quite low-maintenance hair type (straight fine blonde). I usually get it layered with bangs. In fact, I just got my hair cut today.
I've known her long enough that I can describe to her what I want and she'll know (as it's changed over the years). She doesn't scold me on "how damaged it looks"-- usually the #1 problem plaguing my hair type is split ends/breakage though. She's known me long enough that she knows the routine, chop off the crunchy/coarse damaged parts, and re-layer it from there, and do the bangs.
