It's roughly 35% yes and 65% no - I find this pretty balanced and it's close to what I expected. Emilion said she thought there will me more votes for "no" - Hyperlexian and Erisad, would you care to say why you find the results surprising and what you would have expected them to be? I find this thread very interesting, too

IRL a higher percentage of people i associate with said No. of course, that's probably because i associate with people who have overall similar philosophies. stands to reason, i guess.
i figured the number would be closer to 75% No. but... a result of 65% still supports my hypothesis that a majority of women feel this way, and therefore that visiting a prostitute could significantly narrow a man's dating prospects.
interestingly, the majority of the people who commented on the thread seemed to be the Yes voters. why do you (or anyone) think the No voters are less likely to comment?

I think no voters would be less likely to comment as they may percieve the yes voters as quite vocal and fear being called 'judgemental' or 'sexually repressed/illiberated' or similar on this or in future threads. Ive noticed over the last 6 months that wp has seemed to have an atmostphere of people competeing to be the most open minded and sexually liberated and tending to snear at people who dont like prostitutes/porn/orgies.

I agree it narrows their dating field - in the other thread I only protested the idea that "all nice women" will feel this way. I also mentioned that the guys (in that thread) wanting to go to a prostitute seem to think they ran out of options anyway, so narrowing these options even further would have a different impact than on a man who just does it for "fun" or something like that.
Since I voted yes (and also made no further comment) I'm not sure why the "no" voters commented less here. Maybe they don't want to have to explain or justify their choice or think they will be judged for it?
Personal experience plays such a major part in this - to my knowledge, I never slept with a man who went with prostitutes, but this doesn't mean they wouldn't have done if they had a reason. Back home prostitution is illegal anyway.
Lotusblossom answered while I was writing and she makes a good point. Before the subject being discussed on several threads here, the only women IRL that I've met and were against prostitution were either very religious or had a small town/village mentality and not much education. So I could have associated the two. That's why your points were so interesting to me - you obviously don't fit any of those categories and your position, though very passionate, makes sense.

This poll hardly proves the majority of women feel the same way. It only proves the majority of women that voted do.

it isn't a scientific poll, no. i state that in the OP.
would you care to show me the results of a poll that satisfies your requirements? if not, then this poll is all we have on hand to discuss.

I expected the "no" votes to be about 80% actually because I didn't think people would be willing to admit that they would be okay with it, considering how negative the views on prostitutes are. Chances are, they're cleaner than most girls that live on certain college campuses.

EDIT: i deleted what i was saying. providing my background as a sort of explanation on WP has become an invitation for some people to attack me personally. i should not share so much. need to learn boundaries.

That was obvious from what you have to say on the subject - I hope my post didn't imply something else

It's true I don't discuss this subject very often IRL - what I meant was that you were the first person I've "met" who didn't justify this particular position in an ignorant or prejudiced way and that made your discourse very interesting to me, even if I don't agree with all your conclusions.

My first boyfriend used prostitutes a few times before we got together (in his defense he was bipolar and experiencing a very manic and hypersexual phase). I cant remember if he told me about it before or after we started a sexual relationship. After I think
So I guess I'd be ok with a guy who used them once or twice. But if it was a guy who used them regularly certainly not.
