Pads. I tried tampoons when I was 15 but couldn´t "get it right" (or it could´ve been that I´m overly sensitive "there"). It hurt all the time and when I was going to pull it out it got stuck just inside the opening (sorry for being graphic). I had it in there for 24 hours and it was so painful, at last I managed to pull it out.

Another vote for the mooncup/keeper/divacup etc.

Pads I just didn't like. The noise they made, the feel of them on my body, they seemed to bunch up as I moved, and even the thickest leaked. Plus my periods used to be so long that I'd end up with an infection from having my crotch wrapped in plastic for all that time. Just horrible!

Tampons were a little better, they felt cleaner and more discreet, but on my heaviest days I'd bleed through one in an hour, and the ones that expanded lengthways were uncomfortable & seemed to leak worst of all.

Whereas mooncups are held in place and don't leak at all (they make a vacuum seal so they can't!) are comfy to wear, work out miles cheaper than buying products every month, you only need one to deal with heavy or light days and they are good for travelling, festivals etc when you might not be able to get to the loo for hours. And there's the environmental factor. No used product to throw away each month, no bleached cotton, no wrappers & boxes, nothing going into seas or landfills. And I've found I haven't had infections since giving up disposable protection.

The downsides are that they can be tricky to insert and remove at first (but they can be used with lube), you have to be okay with a bit of fiddling about to ensure it is in the right place, and cleaning it is kind of graphic content! But I wouldn't use anything else now.

Definitely pads. I have issues with the thought of sticking anything up there.

I feel like every woman I know uses tampons... I am the only one I know who still uses pads and likes them. I can't stand having tampons in... it just creeps me out.

Pads. I tried a tampon, took me a lot of lube and 15 minutes to get it in. Pulling it out was hard as well. Pads feel comfy and are easy for me.

I prefered to use tampons. Nowaday I use pads, because I use a copper spirale now to prevent pregnancy, and if I got an infection the spirale had to be removed. Using tampons have an increased risk of getting an infection compared to pads, so now I use pads. I dont like them, but all sort of preventing pregnancy with hormones was horrible for me (tested various products) and a condom is ok for me for a one night stand or a fresh relationship, when your partner hasnt been tested yet, but I am now 13 years in the relationship with my partner, so I didnt want to use that damned condoms anymore.

The thing with the pads is the only misadvantage for me, but compared to the advantages of the copper spirale its ok and its not that I am forced to use them, so if I go swimming one day or do some sport, I still use tampons for some hours.

I use pads, I tried using tampons but it just doesnt feel right and I dont feel comfortable with it and I got nervous. I just stick to pads. I'm afraid if I get a tampon in so its comfortable and I dont feel anything, I'm gonna forget to take it out especially on the drier days.

Pads.

The thought of anything going "up there" disgusts me, even at the age of 20.

I will NEVER use a tampon.

About three or four periods ago I started using the disposable menstrual cup, Softcup. I will never use tampons again and I only use light day pads or liners for spotting. They are the best menstrual product I have ever used and they cost the same or less per period. I paid about $10 for a box of 24 about 2 periods ago and I still have half a box. After the first few times putting them in and taking them out I had it down and have never leaked.

Menstrual Cup. Though they can and do leak for various reasons, so you need a light pad as back-up. You sleep so much better though as your mind is more at ease. Took me a long time to get the courage to use them, now I won't go back.

I can't go without tampons. I hate the dripping sensation that happens when I am wearing only a pad!

Another vote for the cup, though I use MeLuna because they make the smallest (and cutest) cups out there. I tried a regular Mooncup, but it was the wrong size and shape for my tiny body and caused constant pressure and pain.

I had to have an awkward conversation about tampons with my mom when I was about 12, but she was really great about it. I had started my period, but the chemicals in the pads were causing painful rashes (and the feeling overall makes me feel like vomiting anyway)... so I bought a pack of standard applicator-less tampons while I was out with a friend because I really wanted to be able to use them. As you can imagine, a 12 year old trying to stick a dry wad of cotton up there... it was horrible. I accidentally left my little box of tampons in the bathroom and my mom found them, at which point she sat me down and explained to me that there were much better options that wouldn't hurt. She bought me Playtex Gentle Glide tampons with the rounded plastic applicator, and it's what I ended up using until just a couple years ago when I discovered the cup.

So to the ladies who can't seem to use tampons because they're too painful to put in, I'd greatly suggest the Gentle Glide ones, and even using a small amount of personal lubricant on them. I can use my little cup just fine, but to this day I can't use non-applicator tampons.

Addendum:
For anyone interested in the tiny MeLuna cups, I wanted to let you know that it appears the little ones I use are now referred to as the MeLuna Mini, as they have a new line where the small size is a different shape. You can see them here: http://meluna.eu/meluna-mini-classic.html?___store=english&___from_store=deutsch
