In the Waipio valley in Hawai'i, on the big Island, there are semi-wild horses wandering around free. :)

LKL and kfisherx, you said it best. It is the joy of communicating with a hon-human and non-demanding species in a form of intimacy that you can't with humans. I think it might have a lot to do with Asperger's.

As a child I grew up around horses and they were just part of life. I had a bad riding experience as a teen, that put me off them for a time. Now, at 50, I'm taking up riding again this year.

I find the best relationships in my life are with animals. I have four large dogs I live with, and a cat, and have no desire for a human in the house with us. Too complicated. My dogs are my friends, honestly. They appreciate solitude and silence, they keep me calm, they go for walks in the woods with all the joy that I myself find there. They are interested in my safety and well-being, more than most humans ever were. At this point in my life and my journey toward self-awareness, I want to explore a relationship with a horse again.

Carole, I'm wondering if you have read some books by Temple Grandin? And if you are aware of http://www.howrse.com (careful, it's addictive).

This is precisely why horses, and then the "Dragonriders of Pern" appealed to me, and why I've had pets my entire adult life.

One of the many reasons I became steadily convinced I was on the spectrum is how the only people I've found who relate to animals in a way that makes sense to me were also on the spectrum.

Yes, I was horse obsessed as a young child, and still am obsessed with them today (almost thirty years down the track).

My horse interests became more and more specialised as I became older, focusing on one particular breed, and then on very specific aspects of that breed. I used to write articles for publications on these aspects, but stopped working on the horse material when I resumed non-horse related studies.

I own several horses, but I rarely ever ride these days. I am content to enjoy their companionship.

Horses are very important to me.
I love being in their company and caring for them.
Never saw the fun aspect in dressing them up or making braids though.
I usually groom as much as I feel like both me and the horse appreciate. Then it tends to be more like scratching heads which does little to get the horse any cleaner.

When I was little, I think around 5 years old, I used to canter through the room on all fours, pretending to be a horse. Also pulled my sleeves over my hands, so I'd have hooves :)

I don't do that anymore now, but I still own many horse-related items.

My own horse is stabled just across the street from where I live, so I can go there often and help out with the other horses. There I can be "just me" and be accepted, which works well to relieve stress.

Running around and playing with my horse is just as much fun as riding to me.
We also do clickertraining. He is a swift thinker and devours those little tasks.
It is nice to see him when he understands a new command, shining proudly.
Furthermore TTEAM exercises have been beneficial for both him (nervous thoroughbred) and me (insecure).

You'd totally hate where I go to school. XD Pretty much everyone here is majoring in zoo or animal science, and I'm one of the few that's majoring in Accounting. I kind of agree with you, though; horses are neat but I'm not crazy about them.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread :)

Just a quick further to it, if anyone is interested ...

My daughters graduated from the University of Arizona this spring. The youngest (by about 20 minutes) got her degree in Animal Science, and got a job with a thoroughbred racing stable in Kentucky. Look for her in the sports pages in about 10 years ... she'll be a famous trainer :)

I was never much of a horse person but I loved fish and cats growing up. I was weary of dogs while growing up because I was attacked by one when I was 3.

Sorry! I just now saw this ...

Yes, I've read some of Temple's books, and of course saw the movie about her. Fascinating lady!

I have always loved horses and still do. We have a small Welsh pony farm where I try to concentrate mostly on breeding. I used to start young ponies under saddle but eventually grew to dislike the attitudes of the buyers. I am just not into the show scene anymore.
