Do periods change with age?
Can some mature ladies here enlighten me?
For the last year or so my periods have been getting rather funny.
Sometimes they're super heavy, sometimes they're alright.
They've been anywhere from a week early to a week late (as well as on time....sometimes)
This latest period, just when I think it's going "normally" for once, I start to bleed really heavy all of a sudden on like the 3rd day in, with bloating and mild cramps that usually only occur on the first day (but didn't this time). They've been getting shorter too (I've been able to wear just an LBL pad by the 5th day or so).
I'm in my early 30's now and I'm wondering if the erraticness is a sign of perimenopause. Or maybe I need to get to the Dr ASAP?
30 is much too early to start going into menopause. If your changing periods bother you, I'd go see a doctor about it. Changing periods could possibly be due to endocrine problems (hormones), and certain other medical conditions. Though most of the time, no real cause is found and it's harmless.

"Early 30's" is NOT "much too early to start going into menopause", and IS, most likely, peri-menopause----it happened to ME!! Although I'm the age of someone just going INTO menopause (53), I am COMPLETELY finished----and, HAVE BEEN, for several years!! It's not the most COMMON, but I've met a few people, in person, who have experienced the same thing.
For me, my period started changing, around your age. My periods were the EXACT SAME, every single month, for my entire "period life"----as in, duration, and so-forth; started heavy (with cramps), and "trickled-down", 'til they stopped----you could set your calendar, by them.
Around 35, I started with the "night sweats"----absolutely HORRIBLE----it will be like NOTHING you've ever experienced, in your LIFE----even if you peed the bed, as a child!! You'll feel like there must have been a leak in your roof, over your bed, and there was a torrential downpour, while you slept!! It'll wake you up, and you'll have to get-up, and change the sheets, and your night clothes----it's a HORRIBLE feeling! Be warned, it'll cause you alot of sleepless nights! (Suggestion: If you don't have a mattress cover on your bed, get one, NOW! At the VERY LEAST, put several towels between the mattress, and your fitted sheet.)
Around 40, my periods stopped, completely, and I started having hot flashes----again, NOT fun----summer will, just-about, drive ya, to drink! (JUST an expression!)
Then, around 48, I was totally DONE, with everything!
I've heard that the earlier one STARTS, the earlier you finish----but, that may be just an "old wives' tale"----I started at 12.
Another hint, that very few seem to be aware of: If you're white, look at your hands..... If the pink part, at the base of your thumb and pinkie (running-down, to your wrists), on the palm side of your hands, has got alot of white spots, you're very likely in perimenopause----that's how my doctor knew that *I* was in perimenopause.

Yes, there can be several years worth of lead-up hormonal changes before menopause actually comes. Perimenopause, that's what I'm talking about.
I wonder if my weight gain factors into it too (it would be nice to blame that on something else other than poor diet and lifestyle ). I've heard another symptom of it is changes in where fat actually deposits itself when changing weight. Rather than going to your hips it starts going to your tummy. But it's always gone to my tummy so...
Interesting with the palms, they are kinda blotchy

Yes, your weight gain CAN factor into it, too, because of hormonal changes----if, for no other reason than because your hormones make you eat differently. For instance, all I wanted to do, was eaten chicken, pretty much, and anything with chicken in it----I didn't eat beef, for YEARS (on a regular basis).
Yes, I feel where you gain weight, is part of it, as well. I've weighed around 143lbs. my entire adult life (I'm 5'11"); but, I HAVE gained weight, a few times----like, the few times I've quit smoking; and once, when I quit a prescription drug. When I gained weight BEFORE the big M, it all went right to my BUTT----NOW, when I gain weight, as I do every year, at the holidays, it goes right to my stomach----AND, it starts getting harder, to take-off.
To double-check your hands..... I can't remember if the blotches show-up better when you're hot, or cold----I THINK it's when you're cold. Maybe, try this..... Go get the ice cube tray out of your freezer, and sit with your hands cupped around it, for 5 minutes, or so (not right ON the ice, cuz you'll get burned), and see what that does.....
If that doesn't do it, maybe it's that they have to be WARM----try putting your palms together, then put them between your legs, and cross your legs, for about 5 minutes, or so.....
