Just wondering if any of you have poor posture. My mother was always getting after me about it, but I really can't help it. I read somewhere that it is linked to AS.

yes i had poor posture, and my mother was very ashamed of me because of it. she would mock me and embarrass me.

when i was a child of about 9 i had the excellent opportunity to be a page-turner for a pianist in a musical show. i was chosen because i was very responsible for my age and i felt honoured. i dressed in my best clothing and got my hair done. i did a perfect job, but afterward my mother (who was in the audience) was embarrassed for me because she said i was like the hunchback of notre dame.

as an adult i work hard to try to stand up straight but i often forget still.

My poor posture is a combination of Marfan's and laziness.

I stand a good 2 inches taller when i stand up straight. 8)

I always forget to straighten up too. It can be exhausting. I've been seeing a chiropractor for 10 years now and I still hunch over.

I have read it is common to have low muscle tone in AS. I have experienced this and have to work hard to maintain any muscle tone to do such things as standing straight w.o exhaustion. I have also seen it in my two AS kids. Some of us just have to work harder at good posture.

I also have other issues that contribute to poor posture, belly pain causing me to unconsciously curl in throughout the day, and fibromyalgia muscle soreness ect. I work hard to try to combat this with exercise and good posture/ movement. It is a challenge!

I used to. Pilates and Yoga helped immensely in correcting this issue.

Mine is terrible.

I practiced Buddhist meditation for a number of years and they emphasise good posture as well as breathing. I still didn't learn to have good posture outside of the dojo.

Yes, my posture is terrible. Long ago when I took dance classes, it improved greatly. But now due to a combination of fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue and other chronic pain issues, it is really hard to maintain a good posture.

I'm always worrying about my posture. When I'm in front of the computer or just walking down the street...I read somewhere that 'straightening up' actually makes you lose 7lbs, so that’s what’s always in the back of my mind when I'm walking somewhere. It also makes you look confident, too. There’s a lot to be said for good posture. :D

I wanted to add that the "Alexander method" helped me a lot. Look into it for anyone with posture issues.

Yeah I have really bad posture aswell and low self esteem doesn't help. It has caused me to have neck pain for as long as I can remember and more recently back pain. Also I think it's complicated by being a little..... busty shall I say  because I feel self conscious about it and tend to hunch over to try and hide it resulting in bad posture. (I can't believe I just wrote that, I really wish only women could read this thread :? )

Yes, I do...I attribute it to years and years of hunching over a keyboard! When I went to college, my posture was pretty good. Now it is only good if I think about it; I can see that I have already developed a bit of a hunch! My grandmother is hunched and can't even stand up straight anymore! I have found that tightening my core helps me remember not to slump...I also spend time lying on the floor, forcing my back straight and my shoulders to touch the floor. I don't want to become forced to hunch like my grandmother!
