Yes but there have been warrior women, like the Amazons. The Japanese and Mongols men did quite well for their size. Women with guns are equal to men, both with different strengths. Men can be pathetic sometimes, and women in boot camps can go hard and tough.
These West Sumatran people have barely known war except for the inconvenience of some colonisations that barely affected some rural folk.
My daily experience in West Sumatra were that the men were truly in the background. Business and local council affairs were dealt with largely by women. Christianity coexists with native Adat and the nations #1 religion Islam. Depending on where you went... but Adat was alive and strong with little sign of waning. Many thousands of years of imbedded culture, geographical isolation and little economic importance, keeps Adat culture strong
As for being Patriarchal.......

A male representative, or head man, was needed for Government matters.
A dangerous job, as many/all are usually assassinated....
Hmmm Mama mia!
that doesn't sound all that peaceful, actually. As frustrating as things are here, I wouldn't want to see my brother assassinated for taking on some public role.
