According to this study, wearing bras are detrimental to breasts (unless you're forty-five with three kids  ) It sounds way too painful, personally. It's a French study with a fairly small sample(300), but it was followed up on for fifteen years.

I wish I could stop wearing bras but I need the support and don't want to bounce or jiggle. I quit wearing underwire bras and only wear sports bras now.

Ridiculous. Lack of support does more damage. Especially after having children.

Bras are the most annoying thing ever. The tags and back hooks that make my back itch are bad enough but the straps are constantly needing adjusting. Sport bras are too tight around the shoulders and back and too loose around the boobs! And just to make a point, I just took off mine.

(But I'm at home so it's all good.)

Actually I never wear a bra at home, only when going out. I don't want people to stare at my boobs flopping and jiggling around.

(Please forgive the intrusion.)

According to the article cited by the OP...

Quote:
Rouillon makes it clear that "a bouncing braless existence isn't for everyone." Rouillon cautions that his study is preliminary and that it would be "dangerous" for all women to stop wearing bras. He admits his sample size still isn't large enough to be conclusive, and since his volunteers were ages 18 to 35, he can't speak for older women. In fact, in an inadvertently uncouth way, he says, "An overweight, 45-year-old woman with three kids has no business not wearing a bra."

It seems to me (as well as the person who wrote the article) that Rouillon is telling young, svelte, childless women to go braless whenever possible - especially in public.

While I do not dispute his methods, his conclusion may be somewhat biased and self-serving ...

 True. I did find the results to be surprising, though. It seems counterintuitive.

I've read before that bras can make the muscles that support the breasts weaken and atrophy making them sag without the bra.

I guess for women that had a bunch of kids or really huge breasts those muscles just aren't going to hold them up no matter what. I don't see how it would be dangerous for them to not wear bras except it might be uncomfortable and not something most people would want to look at. I remember seeing an older fat lady that used to live down the street from me and she must not have been wearing a bra because they were literally down to her waist.

Actually, they're ligaments - "Cooper's Ligaments", to be exact.

Wikipedia wrote:
Cooper's ligaments (also known as the suspensory ligaments of Cooper and the fibrocollagenous septa) are connective tissue in the breast that help maintain structural integrity. They are named for Astley Cooper, who first described them in 1840 ... The ligaments run from the clavicle and the clavipectoral fascia branching out through and around breast tissue to the dermis of the skin overlying the breast. The intact ligament suspends the breast from the clavicle and the underlying deep fascia of the upper chest. This has the effect of supporting the breast in its normal position, and maintaining its normal shape. Without the internal support of this ligament, the breast tissue (which is heavier than the surrounding fat) sags under its own weight, losing its normal shape and contour ... In middle-aged women, breast ptosis is caused by a combination of factors. If the woman has had children, postpartum hormonal changes will cause the depleted milk glands to atrophy. Women who experience multiple pregnancies repeatedly stretch the skin envelope during engorgement while lactating. In addition, after the birth of each child, the voluminous milk glands diminish in size, contributing further to sagging. As a woman's breasts grow in size during repeated pregnancies, the Cooper's ligaments that maintain the position of the mammary glands against the chest, are stretched and gradually lose strength. Breast tissue and suspensory ligaments may also be stretched if the woman is overweight or loses and gains weight.

I first read about "Cooper's Droop" in an Erma Bombeck column back in the 1960s.

I think if anything needs to be burned, it's high heels. Most women claim its better in the long run to wear a bra than to not wear a bra, but there are alternatives to footwear besides high heels. Many women think their calves look nicer with heels on, but exercising with weights can fix this easily. And runners usually have good calves, heels or not, weights or not. But overall, bra, heel, nude, to each her own.

I never wear heels. I did when I was younger but I quit long ago. I don't even wear shoes at all unless I leave the house or slippers at home sometimes but only if the floor gets cold or my cat gets in a foot biting mood.

I can't see myself not wearing bras any time soon.

I have not worn a bra unless nessisary for a few years. I cannot stand how they feel. But I am also small enough that a light camisole or tank top conseals the fact that I am bra-less. Some shirts are also loose enough so it is not known.

I've just heard about this, and I don't quite understand why they're saying bras are bad for your body. I mean, they keep your breasts in place, and they seem to fit comfortably, in most cases. Also, I agree with Mindslave about the high heels; those things hurt my feet, which is why I never wear them.

I would recommend taking your bra off your body before burning it.

I tend not to wear bras because the fabric tends to make me itch. I do wear them for going out, but at home I go without.
