I'm going to give myself purple hair (I can't afford to get it done professionally - even if I go in as a model for a student). I need to use hair lightener to do this, as I have dark brown hair. I'm a bit nervous. Any tips?

If you get dye on your skin, petroleum jelly, or even moisturising cream might help remove it.
Remember to make sure the dye is evenly distributed throught your hair, including the roots. Use a comb if possible, and comb in all directions.
If you need to bleach/lighten your hair multiple times, try to leave some time between each application. Also, try not to bleach your hair too much.
Remember that hairstyles/colours are only temporary: if you don't like it, you can always cut it off or dye it a different colour (which might hopefully reduce your nervousness).

dyeing hair is funnnnnnnnnn, i have been doing it for hmmmmmmm 26 years off and on, and also dyed many other people's hair. i have done the bright crayon colours as well. for naturally dark hair, it's good to use the bleach that is specially designed for use before those colours, i.e. Manic Panic has one:

it is hard to bleach your hair by yourself because any missed spots are quite noticeable and hard to correct. i recommend having someone help you that you trust, like a friend or family member. if you have any other questions or need a hand, drop me a PM. i love doing hair!

I had colourful hair as a teenager, so pink, violet, green, blue and that stuff. I have dark blond hair by nature, so I didnt need to lighten it before. A freind of mine, who had dark brown hair, lightened her hair before and when she added the colour she did not get the results she wanted, because of the enlightening before.

I would recommend you to test the enlightening and colouring before on a small strain of your hair, so that the result will be the one you want.

I went with a purplish color called Amethyst once and it made my complexion look jaundiced. That is something to keep in mind. It was a paler shade of purple, though, not really saturated. Maybe your shade of purple is darker.

My younger daughter dyes her hair all the time and has been all sorts of different colors. Her natural color is dark brown also. She has very thick hair and she suggests buying two boxes of whatever dye or bleach you get and use them both at one time. To bleach hers she gets whatever double process bleach blonde color is on sale and she gets two of them. She doesn't use the color that comes with it but she uses the bleach. She follows that part of the instructions and then stops once it's bleached out, dries her hair, then applies the color from the other boxes.

She says if you have thick hair, part your hair in half from either ear to ear or with a center part straight back like you were making pigtails. Use a full thing of bleach or of dye on each side. (If you have thinner hair you may not need to use the entire amount of the second bottle, but it's better to have it than not). Make sure you dry your hair thoroughly after you bleach it before you apply the color. Condition it well after bleaching and rinse the conditioner out very good too. Bleach will make your hair very dry and hard, and will easily tangle. Conditioner helps.

If you want a brighter color then you want to bleach your hair out all the way before applying the color. If you want a dark color with more of just a tint of the color, you don't have to bleach it. Just apply it over your regular color. You could snip a piece of hair from somewhere and try it with the color first to see if you want to bleach it or not.

She said Manic Panic is a good brand, and also Splat. If you can go to a beauty supply store, do that. Make sure you buy a conditioner for dry, color treated or damaged hair and use it after every shampoo. If you bleach it first, make sure you use the conditioner that comes with the bleach kit and leave it on the specified amount of time and rinse well before you dry it and apply the color. Have two mirrors or a friend to help so you make sure you get all the hair. Wear something old because no matter what you do, it will drip on your clothes. It will also ruin whatever towel you use, so use an old one. She has a shirt and two towels she uses just for bleaching and dying. If you have two boxes, use one set of the provided gloves for massaging the bleach or color in and then another set for when you rinse it out.

The dye will stain your tub or shower for a while, so try to just rinse it out in the kitchen sink if it's stainless steel. If you use a tub and it stains, scrub it with Bar Keepers Friend or Comet or one of the abrasive powder cleansers right afterwards. It will get on your face, neck, ears and hands no matter what you do. It should wash off fairly easy after scrubbing with a wash cloth and soap. Save the conditioner tubes that come with all your kits and use it every time you shampoo.

That's about all she can think of right now. It's not that difficult, and it's always better to have extra bleach and color and not need it than it is to need it and have to run out with your hair half done and get more. That's happened to her. You can take it back if it's unopened or save it for the roots if you don't open the box.

My hair is now the colour of Vimto before you dilute it. It looks okay, but I would've liked it brighter. I know to lighten it more next time. Thanks for the advice, everyone.
