I really dislike that opinion. One of my dreams is to build a massive wardrobe. I get a $40.00 allowance and I plan one saving it every nine months in order to buy new clothes. So if I can do that, I will have $360.00 dollars to spend on clothes. Does anyone else despise the clothes are just clothes attitude?

Yop, me. Cloth are not only cloths, but specially with nowadays fashion industry they are as well a huge waste on cotton, water, fertilizer and CO2. Responsible for good agrar areas wasted on the production on cotton for cloths, that are hardly worn two years, instead of the areas being used for useful production of food to feed people, and go against the rising food prices around the world, during the last years. As well as they cause a lot of chemical global pollution because many of them produced under price in countries without sufficient environmental restrictions, so that there can be no gathering of garbage water. Or fair payed workers. :D

Sorry, but the engineer for environmental development in me was screaming for that answer. XD At least: Please try to avoid rainforest-wood for your wardrobe. ^^

I do care about what I wear, but if others don't, that's fine by me. (as long as they're clean)

The important thing is not to force your opinion on others either way.
If you care about your clothes, that's great, but to some people it's not something to fret over. And if you don't care about it, don't look down on people who do.

If clothes were just clothes, we'd all be wearing burlap sacks right now. How people dress does send a message to other people, even if it's "I don't give a d#mn about clothing". Various examples: dressing more formally for a job interview or to attend church is supposed to convey a message of respect for the venue. Some jobs require "professional attire", because they want the employees to convey a message of competence, business-focus, and probably in some offices conformity/teamwork centered.
If you schlep out in your pj's at 2pm, it's going to be treated differently than a pencil skirt and heels. Casual clothing speaks about a more laid back mindset.

I don't believe that the clothing makes the guy/gal in principle, but there is a lot of power in the message that it sends out to the public, and how it may influence perceptions.

I care little for clothes out side of the dictates of comfortable and modest, and the occasional bit where society dictates what I must wear (for interviews etc). Your enjoyment of clothes is probably rare among aspies, as most others I know struggle with sensory difficulties in how clothes feel. I must have soft, very washed, cotton, movable, not tight clothes. Beyond that if they cover and fit I do not care about how they appear.

Clothing is a hassle, especially when I need to go buy more of it. The only clothing I'd like to buy is Nintendo clothing and video game stuff. Is clothing your obsession? Just curious. Seems like most of us have some kind of obsession(s).

Well if you're struggling to afford clothes, I would imagine that they mean a lot to you. Clothes do have various purposes and the kind of clothes you wear create a certain impression in people's minds, so i can understand why you would want to dress in a certain way. However for me, clothes are not much more than that. I know that others are passionate about fashion design and that's fine, but I mostly dress for comfort.

Clothes are a form of self-expression. What I wear tell people who I am, which in this case, someone who likes comfort. :D I have a big wardrobe full of comfortable clothes. People who say clothes are just clothes probably have a small wardrobe of comfortable clothes, which is not all that much different. I just have them in more colors, different materials and prints. :)

I love clothes, but I don't like wearing overly revealing clothes or too much synthetic materials. I'd have a bigger wardrobe if I could get down to a healthier size and stay there. I will wear more dressy clothes sometimes, but one thing I refuse to do nowadays is high heels. I'll wear nice shoes, but they must be comfortable because it's disabling in a big way if they're not.

Buying clothes was a real hassle until I finally started buying them on Ebay, and then at thrift stores. Much cheaper, too! :D

How you dress really does affect interactions with many people you meet.

I don't really care about clothes. As long as they are soft, comfortable (so that I don't feel the need to rip them from my body) and clean, I don't really care.

My Diesel shoes got wrecked and my Etnies were accidentally left outside when a snowstorm came and I don't know where my Pumas are.

U can get some interesting stuff at thrift shops.

My last purchase was a blazer (great condition) and it fits me perfectly. I got it for $6.

It is pleasant to put together outfits that make me look good, but there are days when I really just want to be comfortable

When I saw the thread title, my jaw dropped. Clothes are NOT "just clothes" to me!! ! Clothes are my lifelong fascination.
